The E24 M6 and the E28 M5 got either the M88/3 or the S38 B35 depending on where the car was being shipped to. The M88/3 was a non-catalytic converter car and the S38 B35 was a catalytic converter car.

I am aware that the M88/3 was used in the E24 M6, E26 M1, and the E28 M5. I listed it to tell you that two different motors were available for the E24 M6 and the E28 M5.
The non-cat e28 M5 and e24 M635CSi had the M88/3, as you say, but the M1 had the M88, which wasn't used in any other road car AFAIK. The main differences between the M88 and M88/3 is that the former has a dual-row timing chain (like the S38 follow-on) and a dry sump. It's also installed fully upright, not at an angle like the M88/3.

Good catch, I meant to say that the E24 M6 and the E28 M5 had the M88/3 and the E26 M1 used the M88/1.

Right but it used different internals and was assembled in a different location - like I said a bit of a gray area

Ford was said to have fitted their Lincoln LSC coupe, which weighs in at nearly 2 tons, with a BMW 524td diesel engine. I have never seen pictures just a vague reference in wiki.

The engine choices were a 5.0 L V8 and an ultra-rare (200-500 made) 2.4 L Straight-6 diesel. The diesel was a BMW design with a turbocharger. Rumors have it that a 5-speed manual transmission was bolted to at least 1 of these diesels. It was available on all trim levels until the engine was dropped after 1985.

Right on both counts, I know they made an E28 524td, but they did NOT make an E34 525td/tds.

So - it looks like the answer to the question so far is a yes? Interesting little thread.

If the question is "has BMW ever used an individual motor in only one car," then the answer would be no. There's the S14 in the E30 M3 and 320is, the S50 in the E36 M3 coupe, and a handful of other ones that members thought of.

And I guess it's spelled wrong as well.

I consider the e30 and e30 m3 to be the the same body - don't you?
