Touring car battle: E30 vs e90

Two touring cars, one track and 17 years between them - but just how different are they? PH finds out...

‘It definitely smells like a historic car, there were fumes inside,’ he says. ‘It’s got a nice balance though, a nice feeling, but you certainly carry less speed into a bend. I was trying pretty hard but I was losing time when changing gear. It’s a nice handling car but it feels less pointy than mine and the steering is much heavier.
‘It wouldn’t be quick enough to get anywhere near the back of the WTCC grid today.’

So, Dan Wheldon has 400+ pairs of shoes, and Andy Priaulx doesn't like having to drive a stickshift and manual steering.

Why are British drivers such queers?

Swing wild, brake later, don't apologize.

so all was said, e30 M3 needs bigger brakes to compete with today's tourers?

      How interesting.

They "forgot" to mention the actual lap times, instead opting to make excuses for the E90 (tires, worse power-to-weight).

I would love to do a back to back test. The truth is I haven't driven many new sports cars at all. I can imagine the "good handling" e30 actually handles like complete crap. Nothing competes with a open wheel formula car with brand new tires. Our FSAE car was pulling 1.44 sustained cornering Gs during testing...

Very valid point. About the only commonalities are the number of cylinders under the hood and the Roundel badges at each end.

Not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison. More like apples-to-steak.

Does anyone else find this guy's estimation of the "off" tyres costing him 15-20 seconds a lap, on a track just over 2 km long, a little hard to believe? That's a MASSIVE difference...got to wonder about his ability to estimate the E90 being something like 10 secs a lap faster than the E30.

                            +1...no lap times = fail.

Yeah, they said it's fast to have a minute long lap. There's NO WAY tires of any sort are costing the E90 10-15 seconds, 1/6 to 1/4 of the total time. I'm sure it's blisteringly faster still than the E30, but not quite as much as it may be making it out to be.
