The article was debunked on the M3 SIG a couple days ago - it is a joke.

In 2007, the BTCC series at Brands Hatch top qualifier (the 320 in this test) ran a 49.5.

In 1991, Will Hoy qualified at the same track in an E30 M3 with a 48.76

Chances are the e30 in the test was out of spec compared to its prime and the driver simply wasn't used to it. Saying that it would be 10 seconds behind and wouldn't even make the grid is horribly biased.

It is a joke all right, but was it intentional?

Poor build quality and generally less reliable than 80's German cars that were built like tanks. Its pretty much a fact that BMW builds cars that survive warranty now. Globalization has meant a lessening of quality over the past 2 decades. This is not just my opinion either.

Unless of course, you work on them. Then you dont even have to drive one to know its ills. I drove a few. One a 330i 4-door automatic when the E90 JUST came out and another a 335i 6 speed. Its fast, but very removed from feedback and the steering was too light for my taste. But then again, Im used to E30s.

I thought that the E90 had better sense of fun, and steering, better than E46 and even some E36s. It's impossible to replace E30s sense of raw machinery, from the nearly solid rear end, to the urethane bushings a lot of us install, or the rough roar of the M20s most of us drive... but I had a smile on my face from the E90s I didn't get with a lot of E46s, including the M3s which were more like a leather chair than sports car, and E36s with highly questionable quality (interior, electronic).

Building for the warranty has been GM's plan for years, and unfortunate costs and another interests seem to pressure companies from overbuilding like the E30 was. But if you have the money that people have already traditionally thought you need to be able to own a BMW, it might be worth it to have an E90 after the warranty is out.

Lets see: more power, less weight, easier to drive, better handling... yet the E90 is faster???

I can definitely see where the brakes are costing him some time, but not 10-20secs a lap vs. the E90. Seems to be written to show how far BMW has come in the Touring car development with a pre-chosen winner.
