In 2007, the BTCC series at Brands Hatch top qualifier (the 320 in this test) ran a 49.5.
In 1991, Will Hoy qualified at the same track in an E30 M3 with a 48.76
Chances are the e30 in the test was out of spec compared to its prime and the driver simply wasn't used to it. Saying that it would be 10 seconds behind and wouldn't even make the grid is horribly biased.
