    O M G I dont know what to do...

Ok, so my husbands 240 just went south, so were pulling the engine and swapping a RB in it (or rebuilding the KA). Why do you care? Because the money for the e30 is now going to the 240. :( Its his daily driver so it gets priority and he needs his car.

I find myself torn over decisions now. I can either wait till Janurary when we have the cash to get a 2500 decent e30, OR, purchase an e30 shell and begin slowly restoring the car from the inside out, then finally buy a rebuilt engine and install it. (We have an engine hoist and stand already for the 240 so by that time he should be done with it.)

Problems occur when I look at all the options I have. My goals are simple: 4 doors, e30 body, good engine. Thats all I'm going for. When I look into attempting a rebuild on a m20 I realize I'm not a mechanic and will ruin the engine. When I look into buying one already rebuilt I realize that I don't trust a lot of people and who knows what they did to it. Then I look at swapping in a bigger newer engine (m50) and things start to look up until I see how much premium gas costs. (but think of how much I save by not having a car payment)

When it comes to the m20 engines, do I go with the e or i? Do i just give in and get a 318 to save gas and at the cost of power?

I need to do more research on the m50 swaps, s50 is out of the question $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ lol.

My thinking currently is to get a shell, clean it up, prep it for a swap and by the time Im done with the cleanup ill have the money for the m50.

    Comments? Suggestions? Flames??

Buy cheap and restore/rebuild. Thats the only way you will avaoid surprise failures like the hubby's 240.

With time hunting etc, you could do an m50 car done right all for under 4k. And you dont need premium in an m50 I dont beleive. Just dont chip it.

buy a good 5-speed shell..get an M50 from pick-n-pull...research ,research, research. If Mr jetgirl can RB a 240, then he should enjoy the M50 as well.

One comment I have on the premium gas comment, is I've learned to brainwash myself with (what used to be) the case, of gas going up every couple days, every time I had to get gas I just had to feel like I was living a week in the future of what Regular would cost. I try not to think about it =S

If you're entirely concerned about gas mileage, the eta would be fine, but the i motor would be a lot more fun, IMO. You could get a 318i/is and have fun with a peppy 4 cylinder for a while though too while saving even more gas until you have the money to do a 24v swap of any kind.

                      DIVORCE !!!! :hitler: jkjkjkjk

Seriously do what you have to for now, and when you can find you a nice e30 to rebuild, grab it. They can be found for cheap and work your way to a m50 transplant. Hell a buddy of mine picked up a nice 85 m10 318 for $500 and runs and drives nice and looks even better, so the deals are out there, you just have to look for them.

                      good luck...

If it didn't have to be four door, I could tell you where to find a decent '86 325es for $1100 and the guy has two M50's for a good price and I believe will even do the swap for you for a reasonable rate.

My perfect sub 60k one owner 90 cab was lucky to get 14/25. The difference in premium is not that big a deal. I have been driving an 01 Acura CLs that needs premium. I am happy to pay the 15-20 cents more to get more than double the mileage of my Landcruiser (9/12 vs 19/30)

                          My 2cents.
