    LAPTOPS?!!?!?

ok. im about to take off for college at the University of Vermont. i have the IX. now i need a laptop.

i have a budget of about $1700-2200, but i am willing to go a little over if the situation calls for it.

basically i want the sickest laptop for that money. i want it small (not tiny) and powerful. programs are not really that important. just Microsoft word and some other stuff. im not looking to do any hardcore gaming.

a lot of people say dell, but i always thought dells were for idiots who can't use a computer.

basically i have not clue, any advice would be appreciated.

    thank you,

    marco

p.s- whats the best place to buy em? ebay? best buy?

First off, i'm not a laptop fan at all. If for some reason you decide to go desktop check out my computer first:

If I was to get a laptop it would probably be something with an Intel Centrino Processor. Decent brands include Sony, Toshiba ect... I would stay away from Dell, HP/Compaq they are crap. Get something with atleast 512MB of RAM and anything above 2.0 Ghz will get the job done for you. When shopping make sure you check out the screen quality, you will be looking at the screen all the time and make sure you get a high quality one. I know Fujitsu laptops come with killer screens.

Thats really all i can think of for now, again look for a Centrino, they come with better battery life.

Yeah, good small laptops... my friend has a Sony Vaio and he's been very impressed with both the durability and power of it, but then again he's very careful with his computers.

"I've always thought that dells were for idiots that can't use computers"

What sort of a dumbass statement is that?

It's a brand, it runs Windows, like 95% of the computers out there. The Dell's don't load themselves up with all the "helper" crap and system restore space like the Compaqs & HP's do.

I'd say take a look at the Dell X300 line of laptops, I'm currently running an X200, and love it. 12.1 inch screen, about 2 1/2 pounds built in 802.11, perfectly portable machine.

Oh, you might also want to do a search for the other 17 threads posted in the last month from all the college bound kiddies that need notebooks. Just stop reading when all the mac zealots turn the threads into shitfests.

Dell is a good product.....had one of their desktop systems for about 4 years. Served me well. Currently using a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I splurged a bit for this one....its essentially a desktop replacement system. Not the cheapest of the lot, but Toshiba has a good rep with their laptops.

lol.. thats funny man. I have been using mac since i was like 6. Its all about opinion for me. I have a gateway desktop p2 350 that has never been too slow for anything that I do. Definitly not my favorite computer in the world and it has some problems, but overall I dont complain to much about ibms. I recently got a g3 333 powerbook. Couldnt pass up 250 bucks. it needs ram, but again, runs fast enough for me. I really like it, because even though its old it does everything all my friends' laptops do. Id say go with a dell if you're used to ibm. if your looking for something fast, smaller sized (because you can order powerbooks in 3 sizes now), and different id say get a mac. Both are good machines

PowerBook G4, that thing is very sick. I'm a weird unix guy, and that's what I'm getting.

Sofar I am diggin my IBM Thinkpad. My dad just got a new one too. The great thing about the integrated Wi-fi is a lot of campus buildings have it now.

One of my fav things about the x-series is that they have a minimalistic computer platfrom and then you attach a media slice that adds drives, batteries, and such. Without the slice its only like 3/4" thick.

Why do you need a balls-out computer if you are just going to run Microsoft Word and basic programs on it?

Did you read his original post Ryan? He said he is going to just run Word and some other basic programs.

and did you read my post? Nobody ever just runs word and simple programs. College is the age of piracy and network games, especailly if he is living in a dorm.

Even then I would get a desktop for that because they can do more for less but the great thing about a laptop is that they can be wireless and portable. Handy if you schools have Wi-Fi equipped libraries and such.

I mainly intended to use mine for microsoft office and inet access when all the computers are busy but it has grown to me watching movies and Top Gear when bored and photo-editing on the fly when I am traveling.

I run a Dell, but not with Windows. I'm sure I don't know anything about computers.

My OS is Linux 2.6.8_rc2_love1 with Gentoo, I'm sure most average peeps with Dells run this too... :D

Id say save the cash for the e30 and look at an iBook. Yes Im one of those mac zealots but seriously, if all your going to be doing is running microsoft word and cruising the net, its all your going to need. Its got the g4 processor, its small, and will have better battery life than any dell on the market. Plus, with Windoze compatible machines your bound to land a virus or two. I run both my ibook and my athlon XP 2100 desktop up at school (Computer Engineering requires it) and for everyday taks like papers and surfing the net cant be beat, it never is affected by adware, spyware, and other such pesky things that almost every Windows Compatible machine I know has to deal with. Plus they start at like 1099, thatll leave you enough cash to throw on some ground controls or leave some money left over for beer once your actually at UVM.

Now let the Mac bashing begin once again

Don't knock PCs, I'm running a PC, never once have I gotten a virus or adware. No one writes anything that harms Linux. ;)
