not if they're illegal in your state, massachusetts highly forbids studded tires, but I have driven in a car with them, and its great.

If they're illegal, the roads never see much snow/ice to begin with.. :)
In Sweden studded tires are only legal between 1st of October and 30th of April. But if the weather makes it necessary, you can use them for longer periods (especially in the north).

they recently made them illegal in washington too, and we get plenty of snow (especially over the passes and on the other side of the mountains). they eat up the roads pretty good and I guess they figure snow tire compounds have gotten good enough that studs aren't neccesary.

I read that they're going to outlaw them in Oregon this coming winter too. There are too many people driving with them on for 5 months (my Mom) when we get about .5" of snow (in the valley) every other year. They chew the hell out of the roads around here; I hate all of the damn deep grooves on the freeways.

I didn't have time to read the whole post, but figured I'd offer my two cents:

Last winter, in MN - I drove my dad's 1990 535i all winter. Had some snow tires on it, Blozzaks. The car handled GREAT. The thing I loved most was it handled perfect, it still slid around, but it was all controllable, and it was natural for keep control on the car.

            I love RWD... ;)
