Just Got Delivery on My New 318ic - Problems!

    Ok,

So the transport came tonight and dropped off my 91 318ic. Looked good, other than dirty from the trip from Cali to Florida.

I'm driving it, drives really well, I pull over and look in the trunk, etc.. There is a whining noise coming from the engine, not sure what that is.

Then I'm looking at the odometer. It's NOT working! I asked the guy before I bought it. He said 114k on the odometer. I asked him if it was working and he said yes. GREAT! I thought, low miles..
I drilled him on a ton of questions, and he said that the car was in excellent condition, it is in good condition, but excellent, no.

The rear window also looks foggy. That's another expense, however it came off of a carrier from California, so I need to clean it to get a proper look at that.

I checked carfax, and on 11/07, the mileage was 108k. So I can't imagine it being too far off from 114k, but you never know.

I paid $1000 to ship it down here, now I have a car with a broken odometer, which I understand, typically can go at this mileage (although seems to be fairly low for it to go already). This I think will hurt resale. I paid $4500 for the car. The title isn't signed, and he did NOT check that the odometer wasn't working.

I wrote him an email stating my concerns, and simply asked in closing: "What do you think we should do about this?" Leaving him to reply with what his next move will be.

    In summary:

    -The odometer isn't working
-The rear window could foggy (have to clean it to find out)
-There is a whining coming from the engine when the car is parked and stopped for over a minute.

What would you guys do. Keep in mind, it's already shipped down here from Cali, I can't just drive it over to him and give him the unsigned title back.

I know I took the risk buying sight un seen, shame on me. I did get a ton of pics, etc from him.

    Confused..

All of the aforementioned problems are likely very minor. The odometer malfunction is related to the one of the smaller gears being broken, ordinarily if the tripometer is zero'd out then you have a broken gear or gears. The rear window fogging up could be a result of any number of things, but at the end of the day, really shouldn't hurt resale value. Try to locate that whining noise if possible, or take it to a mech. and have them find out whereabouts it is coming from.

None of those problems are reason to ship the car back to the seller.

You can fix the odometer yourself. $60 and a hour of your time. I wouldn't really be concerned about re-sale.

Odometer = who cares, get a different cluster or fix it yourself

Foggy window = welcome to the wonderful world of cabrio ownership. Why do you think we all either own or want a hardtop? :) Google convertible top window cleaning, there are some good write-ups out there.

Whining = was the A/C on? It's probably minor.

PS Send me a pic of the center of your wheels. :)

If bought sight unseen with no inspection by a qualified BMW tech you have nobody to blame but yourself. Fix the issues and move on.

Your all right.. I think it's just a bit of paranoia. Beyond all those issues, the car seems to run flawlessly. I'll stop now. :-? Pics of the center of the wheel coming soon.

Well, no he signed it, it was just out of state, so the buyers side obviously was not signed.

                        Isn't it awesome though???

You buy an e30 and suddenly your life is so great...

Within hours you start thinking of timing belt, squeaky doors, windshield pitting, and every little detail that irritates you, and you only.

It's an e30, love it, and everything will fix itself.

And it's an M42 car, so no timing belt to worry about. :)

Is the whining sound, like a "wa-wa-wa" sound? Those are usually wheel bearings if thats the case.
