eat an understeering dick
and this varies with what surface you are driving on, in a formula 1 car, your not gonna be oversteering at all, because they have insane amounts of grip and downforce. in a normal street car going around a track, somewhere around 15 degrees of drifting (i think) is around what is the fastest. when your driving on dirt, this angle gets bigger, you drive on snow, you want to go even more sideways, you drive on ice, you get even more sideways, this is because you have less and less cornering traction, so acclerating in the direction of the corner gives you much more traction in the direction your turning, thus letting you corner faster. why the hell do you think every single rally driver drifts around corners in dirt rather than goes through it with no oversteer? this is basic knowledge.
there is snow on the streets around here 95% of the time in winter, im driving on snow over 200 days each year, half those days its around a foot of snow. ive been racing shifter karts for 10 years, racing spec racer fords for 2, had over 50 track days in my own car, taken 2 racing schools, and done tons of rally cross events and had a good amount of time drifting around in a pgt car(just for fun).
yes i know its a big gay claim, but seriously, i think i know a little about what im talking about. atleast more than some dumbass who cant understand the basics of racing.
and to everyone else, sorry for asking for simple advice, but really im just asking if anyone has reccomendations on how i can get my car to oversteer more than it understeers, like anybody else would like. i know my driving may need some work, ive only been driving this car for a couple months, and i know getting to know the car will make the biggest improvement, i must have gotten used to my audi oversteering in snow extremely easily. but i dont see whats wrong with wanting my car to handle well naturally.
so sorry if i seemed like an ass to anyone, im just asking for some simple advice, and thanks to anyone who helped me out.
oh and just to make it clear, i dont drift around on city streets, there are tons of back roads, service roads, etc... with over 30 feet of flat grass before any ditches, thats where i do my driving. so im not driving around town like crazy being an ass. :DLast edited by ihavefingers; 10-23-2008, 06:05 PM.

atomic, I am not.
ihavefingers, just fix your e-brake. If you suspect it is holding you back from high performance driving, then take a look at it. A set of new cables, springs, and shoes will probably make a world of difference.-OVULATOR (as named by jflip2002)

You would think that with all that super duper racing experience you could set up a chassis for oversteer.
Oh, and anyone who has ever spent even one second in a racing school would know better than to "drift around" on public roads..even back roads with 30 feet(wow) of grass.sigpic

and yes i know its a little irresponsible to be drifting around on anything public. but these roads are wayyyyy out in the middle of nowhere, you can go for hours without seeing anyone driving a car. and i always go with a friend to watch for any cars coming and incase someone messes up their car. i know 3 people personally (yeah i know not alot) that stage rally and they all have their spots on public roads somewhere where they drive to get practice. this is how they told me i should practice if i ever get a rally prepped car for stage rally.
hell one of my instructors reccomended that we go find a good place with no traffic and push our cars if we want to get to know the limits of our cars.

Wrong.... i like to drift my car tooo... but you have to think if it was the fastest way around the corner why does nascar not just drift the whole track... spinning your tires(losing traction) does not make you go faster.sigpicWhite Rock Crew

Sorry to discredit your racing "experience" but playstation doesn't count.
The minute you slide around your corner the tires friction changes from static to dynamic (basic physics stuff), meaning you lose quite a bit of cornering ability as the coefficient of friction between your tires and the road is much less (therefore you achieve less "acceleration"). I know this isn't just physics bullshit and actually applies to the real world because i have real racing experience.
Secondly the reason why rally drivers drift is because all of the track is dictated as they go along, it is not because its faster, it is because they have less time to react to changes in the track.
Your next argument is that a turn is like acceleration. All I have to say is that you don't notice that when you spin your wheels on launches you accelerate alot slower than if you find the point where your tires bark a tiny bit but don't spin? Far as i know every race driver knows that maintaining grip around a corner will get you around it is faster.
Drifting is for fun and looks, don't try to pass it off as a wise racing decision otherwise it would be all over formula 1.
Bottom line? The minute your tires break traction, you are losing time. That is all.
and to all the other members who don't know who i am, I'm a lurker that gets really pissed off when people pretend to know what they're talking about.
