like everyone said, it dosnt feel connected to the road at all, but it does do 80mph like its 50 in the e30 hah, you dont even notice your going that fast

I'd take an e36 M3 since they didn't have an awd model

I totally know the feeling. I'm selling my e46 330 because of picking up an 89 325is. The same as in your case, the e46 smokes the e30 in every conceivable performance category you can think of, but the 325 is simply more fun to drive.

I drove the e46 again after not having driven it for a couple weeks, and it felt like a pig. I think for it's BECAUSE the e30 is "noisier, rougher, and about 10% as refined" that I love it so much. There's definately other qualities at play, but I think the rawness of the experience is what I prefer to the more civilized e46. My wife prefers it to the 330, and I let a friend who has an e36 M3 drive it, and he went nutty for it too. Maybe that explains why people are stuffing S50's into them.
I just recently purchased an 03 z06, but i still have my old 89 325is. the bmw was used primarily as an autocross car and HPDE car. It will slowly turn into a spec e30 racer, but for now just a DE car since i will autocross the z06 in SS.

I drove the e30 for the 1st time in 3 weeks to keep the batter charged and fluids flowing. It is MUCH slower than the z and everything in the driver interface is much lighter. But there is definitely something magical about these older bmw's once you hit some backroads. I've gotten to drive a lot of very nice cars at driving events: all m3's, 993/996, miatas, and everything else usually seen. IMHO the e30 m3, and e30 325i were the best in terms of driver interaction regardless of the speed. the miata is probably one of the few that may even be better. maybe it's just because the cars are so light? I guess it helps that mine has a super stiff GC suspension and rolls on race tires all the time.

I'm actually planning on selling my e30 and getting a e36 very soon. I just like how comfortable of a car they are. My mom has a 94' 325is with some mods and it's a pretty nice car. My biggest complant with my mom's e36 is the lack of a LSD. It would make a world of difference if her car was equiped with one. If I could have a M50 swap in my e30 I would definately keep the e30 but right now the e36 is more tangible. The e30 is a car that is only truely appreciated by enthusiest. Enthusiest and the general public all like the e36 for the most part. I think, with my experience as a e30 owner, I can own a tastefully modded e36 without being a typical e36 owner.

                    they have more computer bullshit
                    OBD2 on the later models
                    plastic EVERYWHERE

I want a small nimble car that is under 3000lbs

my e30 does that, plus I see so many goddamn e36's everyday, including over 5 E36 m3's every day.
Its quite easy to get an E36 under 3000lbs. About every prep'd car in Street Mod is under 3000lbs while retaining most of the interior.

There is no more computer control, just more updated. About the only thing I can think of is on the later E36's with traction control, but that system was such garbage that most people take it out. On the other hand, the E46 has alot more computer controled features.

The OBD2 "problem" has been overcome for the most part. Tuners are learning the system and can tune them almost as well as OBD1 setups.

IMO, there isn't a better used car buy out there than the E36 M3 at the moment. You can pick up a 95 for under 14k easily these days and have a car that can drive you to work during the week and perform very well at the track on the weekends.
                    i agree fully.

and those who think the e36 is huge, you have no idea. its almost identical in size to my e30 m3. and parts are 10 times cheaper then my e30.

the handling isnt there, but the short gear ratio in the steer rack feel a little better(qucik turns). but you cant really feel the road in the steering.

the e36 m3 is a little faster then my e30, but thats just off the line, i have yet to take the e36 to the track. The e30 feels better though, i love to rev that sucker out. the e36 cuts off before 7k (i need a chip) and its all tq until 4k rpm, then i hate the car. nothing like a high reving car.

the interior is a little diffrent, but the obc is almost identical in fetures to the e30 obc. the a/c unit is good (minus the stupid cold/hot vent knob :-/) the seats are not cozy, but not to my likeing, i think the e30 m3 has the secong best factory seat ever. 3.0 csl is number one ;)

mpg is a bit better in the e36, even with the extra cylinders.

and i agree, visability is much better in the m3, minus the tiny dtm mirrors i have.

at the end of the day, i beat on my e36 during the daily drive, but i cheerish my e30 m3, and save it for special days. i dont even think the two compare, ill take the e30 anyday.

I hate driving E36s. I've only driven one M3, but I still don't like it that much. They're too heavy and big, and they're too new.
