Interesting story, Ron. I feel like we must have met once or twice at a San Diego BMWCCA event.
Interestingly, my girlfriend worked as a Master Technician at Harloff during the time they were sold to Autonation just over a year ago. Autonation butchered the dealership, mainly by immediately betraying the employees trust.
She switched over to Cunningham, which ended up getting bought by Sunroad just a few weeks after her switch. Sunroad has, thankfully, been quite a bit better with their employees than Autonation was. It's still a tough place to make a buck these days, mainly due to the slow economy, but it's a thousand times better than Autonation/BMW Encinitas in any event.
I don't think I spent time with the employees of BMW Encinitas after the sale to Autonation without hearing at least once how much they missed the Harloffs as owners.

That's fortunate that your girl has landed a job with Sunroad/Cunningham. Sunroad has been around since the mid 80s and has been rumored to have Mexican Mafia ties, but just a rumor and may not have any validity. I am pretty sure Harloff was the last family owned BMW dealer in the county. In my day, they were all family owned.

Yeah, it's sad what happened to Harloff-there were some employees that were still there and were hired waaaaay before I was. My understanding is that none of them still work there. John Harloff was the one whom orchestrated that deal. John (now 52) had stepped away from the store about eight years ago and had left it with his sister, Ann. John had moved to Austrailia and spent at least six months a year surfing and relaxing. Ann was a devoted dealer principal and really turned the place around after John left. I guess he needed the money and forced her hand to sell the place.

Technically, Cunningham was the last family-owned BMW dealership here in San Diego. Gina Cunningham held on about 8 months longer than the Harloffs, but it's generally respected that after Rug's unfortunate death, she didn't have the energy or the help to run the place by herself.
