my rear subframe mounting point ripped out of the sheet metal under the rear seat. no rust on the car what so ever... i reversed over a baseball sized rock behind my car at the BMW dealership when i was picking up parts... the rear left wheel hopped over it and the mounting point pulled right threw..... i was pissed.1988 e30 alpine white vert 5speed

So, I finally decided to pull out the lining in my trunk and change my shock mounts. After removing the old ones which were completely blown, I took a look at the mounting points to see what condition they were in. Well, I must have jinxed myself by asking about this last month because they are both slightly bent, and one of them has a small crack in it.
I guess the play in the worn mounts let the mount impact the sheet metal and bend it.
The moral of the story is do the right thing and change your mounts before its too late.
I'm left to find some way of reinforcing it. The mounts I'm using have reinforcement plates like the ones mentioned above. I'm thinking about welding the plates to the sheet metal to distribute the the load beyond the cracks/bends.

bummer. rear shock tower bars may be worthless, but the mounting plates on the ends definitely aren't.Comment

I put a new plate on the rear of my brothers sedan, we ripped it open. That corner is made out of soda pop cans.

It happened on my '93 325is in '99. At the time I think it was a relatively new problem. BMW sent out some people to take a look at it at the dealership before it was fixed. I later found out that I was not the only one with this situation. :crazy:Comment
