I believe it was a 5.6l. I don't remember since we sold the car a while ago. Surprisingly it sold for 4g's with over 250k and about 150k on the motor.

Increased rpm results in higher wear for your motor and all your aux systems. All other variables neglected, your car will last longer if you aren't riding your rev limiter all day long.

But, when all is said and done, even if you drive the shit out of it, the M10 is a robust little engine. I honestly wouldn't worry about it.

Plus, if you blow your motor, you can source a working one for a couple hundred bucks and you and some buddies can swap it in on a Saturday with little more than a few hand tools.

Rev your car(the good kind) and enjoy.

I do... :) I learned that m10s are only fun at 5k+ rpms. Hitting canyon turns in third gear around 5-6k is so fun...

Like he said above it is harder on everything to hit near "red line" but they can take it...

Now sustaining those engine speeds will hammer them...

I sometimes hit near redline when shifting, but I cruise at 3.5k-ish at most. That is usually my normal shift point.

I also wondered this same exact thing and on the regular I shift @ 3k most of the youngsters think I drive like a grandma but I like my car and I enjoy just cruising! No rice burning for me but I do rev to 4-5k every now and then ands my heart aches because of what I could be doing to the engine.

Haha. you just summed up my reason for asking this question in the first place. Since im a youngster I feel a need to compete with other "youngsters" while driving. However I'm the only one not driving a 240sx or an Integra. When I do rev that high I'm always afraid of hurting my engine since it so old, and these newer 4banger cars are making so much more power than I am :(.

On frankenKar (M20) I usually shift at 6 or 7000...

On my pretty little M42 Is... Sometimes 8500.

                    But you 'gotta' remember...

I have a whole shop at my disposal and more BMW parts laying around than you could shake a stick at in a week...

I have the potential to get my hands on the tools I need if something goes wrong. I rather not take my chances though in case something breaks and having to wait a week or two to be able to fix it.

The burning smell is normal if you drive the car slow all the time.

And I use to bounce my e off redline all the time when I first got it and nothing bad ever happened.

My meaning is that if FrankenKar's #5 rod comes out the side of the block and knocks the starter to hell... And starts a small fire...

                              For me:

                              1) I'll be back on the road day after tomorrow...

                              and

                              2) It's tax deductible...

Now if it happens to the iS... I'm a little bent, but I have spare.
