    winter/daily driver

ok so I'm looking for a car that I can use while the convertible is out of commission this winter and possibly spring while I turn it into a project car. I'm not totally sure what I want just the max I want to spend on it (~$5000) and I think it'd be nice to have all wheel drive since during the winter I'll be driving an hour each way to work. Some ideas I had: early/mid 90s audi a4 quattro or a e30 325ix. any other suggestions?

Would a $5,000 car make your E30 into the beater/ daily driver?

I'm biased, but at least check out that ix. the earlier ones had stouter drivetrains than later ones, they'll go a long time if you just keep fluids checked up. you can pretty much drive a stock one through almost anything (meaning rough terrain, like say a 5,000 mile rally). have it checked out though, and maybe prepare to spend $1-$2k if something goes wrong with it. that'd still be within your $5k budget.

$1,000 gets you (if you can find it) a hardtop. Another $300 for LSD. Voila! Winterized daily driver! Spend $3700 on hookers and booze.
