I am not poking fun at your build; if anything I am commenting because I would be interested in the final product hence the cost query. I have been looking into the similar product from bmairfilters but their product is mainly in Europe. Make it afforable and we will see.

      And Kamotors,

How intricate can you get with forming ABS?

I'm thinking you could build a complete housing... We should talk
technically I could make something kinda intricate, I like drafting. I had a really cool heat shield with lots of bends and folds that I never ended up selling because I noticed that if it cooled too quick it cracked. ABS can only do so much.

Your new setup looks very cool, reminds me of the cda air box. However I think you old setup, which is similar to what i run is better because the filter is still taking air in around the engine bay and front grill while the hose up front went behind the grill for additional air.

I have mine routed to my brake cooling duct with a mesh in the front, stops most debris before it even goes into the filter, and even if it was restricted, the filter will still get that nice warm air from the bay.

Can you please make one that comes out of the hood with some type of snorkel on it? I like to partake in my local rally events and there are some very deep puddles.

yup but that filter got discontinued. heres some progress

I did some tests with it.

so far I like it alot, its a little quieter than foam filter but thats fine. The filter fit right in their. I'm still brain storming but I should have the kit done pretty quick. I did lots of tests with the filter its a little cooler than the previous kit when i got home and touched it the filter was very cool to touch.

I don't mean to thread crap or anything but any cone filter works with that hose, you just need a little adapter that fits in the front of most after market filters and accepts the flex hose. I got mine from PepBoys for like 5 bucks.

That looks sick by the way, does the heat shield still make a difference?

okay. with this setup a shield is not needed, but my filter was still cool to the touch after driving for an hour.

i have been thinking of a set up similar to that that was influenced by my friends CAI in his rsx

Am I thinking wrong that it would be bad to use the brake duct area because then it would take the cooling away from the brakes, which is more important than a CAI? Or maybe I am understanding that type of setup wrong??

Thats probably a legitamate concern, but some early models had no brake ducts to begin with, so my guess is its not too crucial.

And DC had a nice cooling system a while back, so my guess is under extreme conditions, those OEM ducts dont cut it.

The factory ducts are not even pointed at the brakes, they just dump into the wheelwell.

I think the car would be fine without them, if most people who would be interested in this design are like me, meaning the car is daily driven and rarely pushed to the point where that cooling is needed, water would be a problem though

I wouldn't mind something that went to the foglight location, E46 M3 CSL style. I wouldn't want to use it during the winter months though. ;)

is the piping really that neccesary? It looks like more of a restriction than a benefit. I think having a path from the front of the car to your "airbox" with an open filter would be better than forcing it to breath through a tube with all those bends in it..
