This is the reason why I'd hate lowering my car, so I dont have to drive like a fucking grandmother on roads in fear of bumps.
Ask James or Luke if I drove like a grandmother on what were by far the bumpiest/shitty roads i've ever driven on.
The lip was bottoming out on bumps/heaves on some parts of the road. If the lip is bottoming out that means the oil pan is roughly 1/2inch off the ground.
James through up lots of sparks off his exhuast piping, as did I off my cat. Oil pan is still pristine.
we'll see how long it will be before you crack yours if you keep on driving on roads like that. I will eventually happen.
Unless you end up over a curb I don't see how oil pans get cracked.
Scraped yes, cracked no.
not sure what material other bmw engines use (I know the m10 uses something else) but the cast oil pan for the m20 is brittle as hell. its easy to destroy it if something gets in its way. I joined the club with my '87 325. the road said slow, dip 25 mph, I did 25 and the car bounced of some railroad tracks and got airborne :(
The material the oil pan is made of is what makes it "crack"
Not every situation is avoidable hence the reason why we have a word "accident" which I would use to describe a case where you couldn't avoid cracking the oil pan or did crack it bcos "the big black round thing" was of no use in helping you avoid the mishap.
Even reg. height e30s crack oil pans. Some cases are as they are...accidents.
