Community Gone - Random Posting to Blame

It's about 1AM here Monday the 17th, and i can't seem to find the community forum?!

I'm guessing this is a measure to cut back on bandwidth waste that the section seemed to illict.

Jordan, if this is true, can you run down ways to help cut down on waste? Maybe make a sticky with ways to conserve bandwidth. I don't know personally.

EDIT: Jordan affirmed my suspicion. Half of community was being locked anyhow. If you want to post random shit, it's welcome at http://www.astheroundelturns.com/forum/

A Sticky was made in community several days ago, telling people to stop posting random, completely senseless crap that no one cares about.

It was intended for e30 related community news, and talking about what was going on in members lives. Not for posting "Look at what this guy did to his civic, isnt it rice guys" threads.

Community is gone until further notice.

This is a perfect example of what throws the forums over on bandwidth. Every member who thinks... my one little mindless post wont matter. It all add's up.

My point is... yeah it takes an extra couple kb of the bandwidth, but it really kills a lot of the fun for the forum. I can completely understand taking community away, but it is going quite far when we are basically being told not to reply unless our post is a paragraph long or 100% relevent to the topic

Thats not what is being said... A simple "I'm sorry to see the Community Forum go" or "I agree with why it was taken away" etc is fine....

Now explain to me how "soup Nazi" is relevant to any sort of topical discussion? Funny comments are welcome.. to a degree. Learning that line is the important part.

I think Digitalwave has a point here. You might not need to have a long reply, or a 100% relevant response, but policing posts for any reason besides the truly egregious replies (like stevee30) can quickly kill the spontaneity of the forum IMHO.

Writing BS such as "Soup Nazi" may seem unnecessary and a waste of bandwidth, but it sums up what Syko wanted to say at the moment--that he jokingly feels there is a secret police out there.

I expected a similiar Community forum as some of the other BBs I visit, which usually have totally unrelated topics. Like look at VWVortex, they have a section on recipes, for focks sake! I'm not saying we start sharing recipes on how to bake cookies, but a forum to shoot the sh!t whether or not it's on topic or not.

Please explain to everyone what "throws the forums over on bandwidth" means. Without revealing what I do for a living, I have a couple of questions. What type of connection to the Internet do you have this site running on? Also, what platform and what/how does your host charge you? Maybe understanding this forums limitations would give the users a better understanding of why it needs to be limited. Rather than just saying, "2 word posts use up bandwidth" - which in reality they do not, but we can save the technical explanations for that reality later.

                          Thanks.
