Hmm... interesting. Rather than answer simple questions, you think they will lock the topic? What does that prove? It seems like a silly thing to do. Unless squashing free speech is what happens here when ideas contrary to the admins are brought to light.

Anyone remember the mass exodus from Road Choad when they started deleting posts and banning everyone? Go look at their off-topic forum.... You have Rob in PA and Beemermax pulling each others pud and Hans enjoying every minute of it. It's like their own little playground since we all left in April..... good for them. Hope this site has a little more common sense. Allowing the "crap" to go on will police itself. I intially thought that running the Off-Topic forum for the RF Exiles was going to be a headache - but it is really nothing at all. The gang polices themselves. And as far as bandwidth.... that is a real joke unless they are restricted for 56k..... HAAHHAHAHAHA... I am running ATRT on a 500mhz comp running w2k server connected to comcast cable.... NO ISSUES AT ALL!!!

This is a perfect example of what throws the forums over on bandwidth. Every member who thinks... my one little mindless post wont matter. It all add's up.

Please explain to everyone what "throws the forums over on bandwidth" means. Without revealing what I do for a living, I have a couple of questions. What type of connection to the Internet do you have this site running on? Also, what platform and what/how does your host charge you? Maybe understanding this forums limitations would give the users a better understanding of why it needs to be limited. Rather than just saying, "2 word posts use up bandwidth" - which in reality they do not, but we can save the technical explanations for that reality later.

Ask Jordan. I'm simply the messenger. Jordan has a set bandwidth he can use every month given the rate he pays (per year, month,, whatever it is). Once the use of the site exceeds that bandwidth allowance, Jordan is hit with fees. You are right that the little posts like that don’t take up massive bandwidth... but now think of that multiplied by every member of the board. It all adds up.

E3S went down. You were all displaced and upset.
Many of you came here. Now we make a simple request to cut down on the random shit, and you ignore it. If this site gets closed are you going to all migrate to Roadfly, or BFC, or DTM? Probably not as most of you bitched about paying $10 a year for DTM.

You all know Jordan offers things like this because he wants to provide a service and a community for you. How many of you screamed, pissed, moaned and bitched when he was the admin on E3S and he locked stuff? A lot if I remember correctly. Now, on this site I can say that perhaps 90% of the locked threads were by me. Not Jordan... He hasn’t been on the site as much as most of you think he is. So when he comes here and finds it’s turned into a festival of stupidity, do you think he wants to continue to put up with it?

I made a very polite, direct, and informative post in Community about saving bandwidth. You chose to ignore it. While I sympathize with the idea of a "Community" and the desire to have semi-off topical discussions... it should also be held in check.

Now I'm sure you are all just dying for me to throw the lock down on this thread... but I'm not going to. That would only suit to play directly into your points of view.


And ATRT Rob - I've spent all of 5 minutes on your forum before I became disgusted with the racial, sexual, and generally degrading comments and conversations. I have yet to return.

BTW that was rather foolish to admit you are running a server off Comcast.... that sir, I am 95% certain of, is not allowed by Comcast administration... and just incase you forgot, your IP is logged so it wouldn’t be that difficult to report it to Comcast. Still feel the desire to rag on Jordan for having remote hosting?

I think that about sums it all up. Feel free to respond, I will do my best to keep this thread open and answer all questions and concerns. Ultimately it is up to Jordan whether it remains open....

You have no idea as to what you are speaking about with regard to comcast and using it to serve out pages. Since the site is not a commercial site and is a personal site, there are no issues. I have been using comcast for years and understand what I can and cannot do via their service.

With regard to fees incurred and your perception of me cracking on jordan for using an ISP for hosting: If he shopped around he could find limitless bandwidth hosting for $24.95 / month. I can refer him to the company I used to own. Or you can email bosley@tekhost.com and ask him for a price to host. If $24.95 is too big a pill to swallow, I am sure we could all cough up $0.25 each....being that there are 200+ registered on this site. OR - I'll host his site for free.....or atleast until you report me to comcast.... Let me know if you need my account number.

Lastly, with regard to the content of the ATRT site. The concept was one born from frustration with Roadfly. Alot of us defected from RF and decided that we wanted a place to bullshit free from restrictions. So we started one. Racial comments? Most of the guys on ATRT are not white. No one over there has an issue with any of the comments that are thrown around. Sexual Posts? All visual posts are prefixed with NWS.... we do this so the guys in offices do not get into trouble. And we police this ourselves... and it works... Degrading? Degrading who, each other? We all KNOW each other. We all get together and hang out. Some of our members travel 2000 miles to hang out with each other. We all know how to take a joke. The site is not for everyone. People who need a mommy or daddy should really refrain from going to the site. We do have a standard COPPA agreement, so if you are under 13 you should avoid the site. As a matter of fact we intentionally did not solicit openly for members, our ranks are made up of invitees or referrals. Usually people who stumble onto our site leave right away because it is not for them....then they go to RF to hang out with Hans an Rob from PA..... Good for them..

One more thing:
If it is a free site then how can you afford to spend the time policing it?
If there were advertisers here paying money for a targeted audience, then I would police it.
If it is a community site then let the community police it. Ruling over people for a power trip is stupid....buy a dog.
Put in a policy whereas people can file complaints about posts and then remove them.

Or....you know what....whatever.....see you over on ATRT when jordan gets pissed off and shuts this place down as well...

Well I said I wasnt sure about the hosting thing on Comcast. So for that comment I appologize for my ignorance.

You can get as frustrated with me as you wish. I think any member on this site who was a member of E30sport before will tell you I have always been a very fair, and diplomatic moderator. This isnt a character debate... Its not Me Vs. You here.

As for the money issue, Jordan has always provided the sites for free, and I'm sure he will continue to do so. But a simple matter of respect for that might go a long way. If members want to donate money, that is their choice. I know that Jordan will never ASK for money. He isnt going to beg people to support what he set out to offer as a free service.

I'm glad ATRT group gets along with each other. Perhaps you are correct that the intial view of the site is frightening to new members. For me, it was more the fact I didnt want to have to sort through 8 pages of bullshit to find a 2 line answer. If you guys all get along, good, then congrats on finding the optimal setup of an internet based webforum.

I dont need to be in control. I only accepted to help moderate this forum because Jordan is a friend and he asked me to help with the new site. I have other options for sites to attend should Jordan close this down.

At this point in time, I see no benefit from spending my time here "policing" as you so call it. If everyone wants to make the site go to complete hell, so be it. I'm not a translucent computer geek who thrives off the internet based forums. I have plenty of other pursuits to occupy my time. A college degree for example....

On second thought, I'll tell you why I spend my time on this site...
I was once ignorant about cars. I spent a lot of time reading, ONLY reading, on forums (BEN, Roadfly) before I even began to post. Rather than pestering my father constantly, I took the initiative to search out answers on my own. I feel that it is only fair to give back to the community what it has offered me.

Perhaps that time is over, and I should return to being silent.

Cool.... Like I said, I was not slamming the site, Jordan or you. I got involved with the ATRT jokers on the RF site for the same reasons you got involved with these sets of sites. I needed knowledge as well. Underneath you will see that the guys on the ATRT site have a deep knowledge and understanding of E30s. Even though they do not post tech stuff on the ATRT site..... cause we would give them a ton of crap... ;)

That being said, we span the globe with regards to professions, age, sex, race and stupidity...... so being a diverse group as we are I think that your comments were not well accepted by the ATRT guys. You should be very careful about what you say as you have a position of power, whether you like it or not, and people tend to listen to Mods and what they have to say.

BTW...all of the guys chipped in for the hardware we use to host ATRT.... It's not begging to all chip in and help keep the community going. So, if Jordan needs help and is ashamed to ask for it (which is completely understandable) maybe there should be a rally from the community to help out? What do you think....

Well I didnt spend a large amount of time on ATRT, so perhaps my impressions were skewed. My appologies for pigeon-holing you all into a specific group. Not being fully informed I should preface my statement with it was just my initial reaction. Diversity is essential in any sort of group in my opinion.

I'm not trying to push my opinions upon anyone. I hope that people are intelligent and independent enough to make the effort to decide for themselves.

Anyways, as for the donations, thats up to the community to decide if they feel the site is warranted enough. I'm not going to comment on whether it should or should not happen. Its not my place.

Jordan isnt hosting it on his personal servers anymore to the best of my knowledge.
Thus why he is having to pay for hosting.
