how can I tell what motor it has, I've heard a bunch of conflicting info, it doesn't have the regular M30B35 intake manifold.

its an early m30 with jetronic. probably m30b33, idk about litre-age but its an m30. it'd be a 633csi, not a 635. check this car out

after looking at the years available on realoem, it could be a 3.5 litre, but that intake looks like the older b33's. the intakes for a 79 635csi and a 79 633csi its indecisive on realoem since they list what looks like both.

i've never seen a 3.5 m30 with that manifold though from what i know from my e28 friend. i'd have guessed it was a 633. the older 530i's had that same motor.

The early Euro 635CSi and M535 had a long stroke L-Jetronic motor that was not available in North America.

                      M30B35 (3453cc) has been used on E12(M535), early E23 and E24 (635CSi). all Euro-only.

                      But under E28, E34 and E32 is M30B34 (3430cc). Very different engines.

It's called the "L-Block" Motor or like Euroshark said earlier the "M90" engine. There should be an L somewhere on the block, I believe by the freeze plugs.

This engine has the same displacement as the M88/1, M88/3 and S38 B35 at 3453cc (93.4mm bore and 84mm stroke) with a compression ratio of 9.3:1. This made for a better revving engine than the later U.S. and Euro B34/B35 engines, which had a bore of 92mm and 86mm stroke.

The only cars that received the M90 (or L-block) motor where these:

                        - Early (pre-81) E12-based 635csi
                        - E12 M535i
                        - Some early E24/E28 tuner cars (i.e. Hartge H5S, Alpina B9)

These engines were L-Jet only, used mechanical distributors, and are a completely different animal than the later (82-up) E23/E24/E28 Motronic-based Euro M30B34s.

And to add to that, the only difference between the U.S. and Euro B34s was the Euro B34s had 10:1 compression, which included different Pistons (Piano-top dished I believe), a slightly more aggressive camshaft, and a Motronic 1.0 system (ECU #061) which did not utilize an O2 sensor, which made these cars run rich all the time.

Sorry for the long winded post, I just hate conflicting information.

I have covered this information in depth in the M30 section, but I'll give you a quick run down. It's a 635CSi and we all know how BMW does the names... It doesn't have the 3.2 or 3.3 liter engine. All 635CSi's produced from the begining of the run through 5/1982 had a large bore short stroke version of the M30 called the M90, and it's actually the same block as was used in the M88/3 in the M1 as well as early M635s and M5s and displaces the same 3454ccs. The bore is 93.355mm and the stroke is 84mm versus the standard B34 dimensions of 92mm and 86mm... Remember though, the M90 came before the 3430cc M30B34. Early M90s came with L-Jet and the log style manifold but some of the late 1981 and all 1982 production (as far as we can tell) M90s had Motronic and got the 3.2/3.5 manifold. The M90 shared the same cylinder head as the M30B32 and every one I have seen also has the same casting numbers as the B34 heads.

We all know that the 635CSi did not hit America until 1984 but this indeed a genuine 635CSi and it definitely will have the M90 (lets call it M90B35 for the sake of simplicity) unless the engine was swapped at some point. The M30B35 is a different engine all together so to avoid confusion the M90 is generally just called "M90" or M90B35 like I said earlier.

Edit: Thanks Ben! I think between the two of us we have cleared this up quite nicely!

thanks guys, that what I needed to know,my friend is having trouble identifying it, and I didn't really know a way of confirming what it had.
