same reason they offer two types of axelshafts... 325i/m3/324td gets the bling heavy duty stuff, 316-320 gets the weaksauce driveline..I could be wrong but I don't thing the overall lenght changes, just the beefyness of the part.

I'm 99% positive that the axleshafts on the at least the 318is are exactly the same as the M20 cars.

I agree with you on the length issue though. The small case diff has the same flange to flange width as the med case.

Yeah, the ABS axle shafts are the same between the 325i, M42 318i/s, and M3.

The flange-to-flange distance between diffs is definitely the same. However the small case diff has more distance to make up so the axles flanges are longer to account for the narrower case.

looks like part number 33211226901 covers everything except the 316

Ok i put the diff in, i don't feel any difference in acceleration. It revs 500 rpm higher at the highway speed. Besides that no difference.

You'll feel a big difference in acceleration when it pops.

Oh well at least i got a spare one. I paid only $140 CDN for it. Originally i was only going to use it at the track but now i'm lazy to take it out.
