What do i say to my friend who wants to spend 24k on a new civic SI?

My buddy is buying a new car and i've been trying to sway him in the direction of a good used bmw, he's convinced he needs to buy new because he is worried about the car blowing up or something?
how do i convince him it would be way more fun to get a nice e30/e34/e36/e24/e28 etc. how do i convince him it would be smarter to buy a badass e30 or e34 for around 14k and spend the rest on something else or save it?

Uh, you don't, because it wouldn't. The Civic is a great little car with excellent residual. While it is a vastly different driving experience than the BMW's you mentioned, it is fun to drive. Any $14k e30/4 is going to be an M car. I guess their residual is decent at this point since they are collector's items, but I doubt that is what he is looking for. Good luck though

i agree with him buying a civic and have a trouble-free vehicle. BMW isn't for everyone, sometimes practicality, reliability and warranty is a a grown man needs. All of us here, are boys with toys.

He doesn't want any of the models you listed above. The type of person who looks for best warranty usually can't fix cars themselves.

You let him be because he's choosing a really good car.

Not everyone likes to throw money at a "toy" that sometimes doesn't get them where they need to go or sometimes develops odd problems they don't care to figure out.

well the problem is he wants a performance car, he used to work on trucks and has a badass lifted f250, he just doesn't know whats out there and is used to shitty american products that break alot.

Does he care about who can get from one stop light to another faster?

Because if that's all he cares about then steer him away. But if he just wants a fun, practical, reliable car then let him be. The Civic Si is a great car.

I don't tell anyone to get a BMW. Most people won't want to put up with maintenance and the price of parts, if someone I know wants a luxury car I tell them go get a Lexus. If they get a BMW and end up needing to fix something on it they will bad mouth the brand for the rest of their life while a Japanese car will need less stuff and at a cheaper cost.

If a guy has that much money to spend on a car they probably don't want something that is 15+ years old. Let him get what he wants and that's one less people that can potentially snag a car that I might be after.

i had a 07 si the tranny was crap 3rd gear would pop out and 2nd would grind this was a very common problem 06-08 i am not sure if this is still true for the 09s i was not happy with the quality

also if you read up on 8thcivic.com you can get some good info about them. another bad thing is that they are already steeling these cars. i have heard of a few hear in so cal being stolen non SI too

Well I guess that would be covered under said warranty

That sounds like a car that was beaten anyway. A Civic si is a steal for $24k

Nothing wrong with the Civic. Don't expect perfect handling being FWD and all, but still. It's a new car with an EXCELLENT motor (those K20s have insane tuning capability). Plus, it's a new car. Not everyone wants to be seen in an old bucket like an e30/e36.
