    The pan gasket isn't leaking, and I'm not losing fluid at the tail shaft. Can you (or anyone reading this) figure out where it's going?

      The bands cylinoids (spelling?) are getting old in the trans and are not allowing the correct line pressure. Keep the fluid full and drive it till it goes boom. Than, install a rebuild trans.

        Thank you! Solenoids, but you were really close. They would cause fluid loss?

        Edit: It's weird that this site is more helpful than the cherokee forum I joined.

          Solenoids, that looks a bit more like it, HA. No they will not cause fluid loss because they are inside the trans above the filter. The fluid helps keep them cool.

            if it has a trans cooler in the radiator it could be leaking into your coolant. look for strawberry milkshakes in your coolant :)

                  Don't mind the busted window... some hater neighbors... they left plenty of evidence at the crime scene as you can see (i.e., lawn clippings).

                    nice my parents had a jeep like this i think it was even a little bit older it lasted forever very good rig i am thinking about getting a mid 90 jeep so i can toe my car to drift events and for daily driving.

                      nice score! the 231 is a nice transfer case and the AW4 is the best auto tranny jeep ever used.

                      some 2" HDPE pucks up front and a add-a-leaf in the rear, new shocks all around, some 15x8 black steelies and a set of 30" or 31" all terrains should get you pointed in the right direction. careful with tire diameter increases though, with those 3.55s you'll lose power fast.

                        I just flushed the coolant, tranny cooler isn't leaking. Coolant was a little rusty and dirty, but no creaminess. Transfer case isn't leaking either, and it wasn't over full so it's not going in there.

                        Ya I was wondering about that, the hard shifting problem was just low fluid. I just can't figure out where its going.

                        I want your setup, minus the lift. This is a strictly on road jeep, the closest it's going to come to off road is turfing a lawn.

                          Some mileage info I just calculated to blow your minds:

                          1988 BMW 325iC = 18.3 mpg average

                          1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo = 22.6 mpg average

                            That is just plain wrong! The Jeep cannot get 22 MPG, at most 15-16 MPG average, maybe in highway under 60 miles per hour,but not mix nor in pure city. I hava a modfy XJ as well for race besides service many of them.

                              I went 370.6 miles on a 16.4 gallon tank. :D

                              Only 175 of those miles were pure highway at 65 mph.
