the genral consensus seem to be "NO," but if you wanted, I would imagine you could heat up the lense and diassemble it and paint the inside with a translucent high-temp black paint.
I have a spare, rusted out H1 high beams, maybe I should try it and see how it looks.

The consensus is actually "YES". Nick did it with his US Ellips and I actually posted a short "HOW-TO". Do some searches. The project consists of doing the same thing Hella does to give their "smoked appearance" without affecting light output.
In short, because i'm not gonna type it all out again.
1. Remove lenses
2. Paint chrome reflector in low beam flat black as it is not used by the projector.
3. Create a black baffle in the shape of a plus sign "+" and place it in the high beam. Be sure to cut it contoured to the dome shape of the headlight housing. Also cut out a rectangle in the center so it gives room for the bulb.
4. Paint outter headlight rings black.
FInished. The high beam is the only thing that takes a little bit of time.

that's where you're mistalen.. smoked ellips don't use any sort of translucent paint. the low beams have the outter reflector painted black (it's not used for anything anyway), and the high beams have a black plastic crosshair to give the illusion of smoked glass.
the hard part is getting the lenses off, and making the crosshairs for the high beams fit the contour of the relfector housing.

You didnt scroll down far enough...haha, I beat you by 2.5 hours ;) .. No matter, more positive reinforcement is always good.
I know, I was just letting him know that the smoked ellips don't have any form of "tint paint" in them, less he try and tint spray his H4's and fuck up his light output. :P

Ah, fair enough. Wow, i should read more carefully. When I read his post, and he mentioned getting the lens off and using translucent paint, i figured he was just talking about painting the chrome reflectors with translucent black... haha, no wonder i couldn't figure out why he wanted to use translucent paint to paint that chrome reflector, he was talking about the lens...:tsk: Haha.. Nice catch.
No, what I think he meant was to use a translucent paint on the reflective ring around the ellipsoid inside the headlight. Possibly he thought that the light still needed to use the relector on the lowbeam so a translucent paint would seem better to use than an opaque paint.

That's what I originally thought he meant. Either way, use flat black on low beam reflector.
ive seen replica hella inserts for smoked ellips on ebay.de for around $40 US. with those i guess the hardest part in making DIY smoked ellipsoids would be removing the outer lense
