what likely happened was the grease in your splines probably dried out (or oxidized). splines rust, driveshaft strips. doh! you should be checking that once a year. I'm planning on checking mine at the end of the summer. it's really easy (6 bolts that hold on the driveshaft and a centering pin) so no excuses. ;)

oh yeah, while you have the t-case out rebuild that shifter linkage. it's the only way to get to it anyway. I'd suggest a Z3 1.9 lever, the stock ix lever is like a freakin' row boat.
yep, I thought it was a bit more intense than that, but now I know. Shifter rebuild is definetley in the works, its very loosey goosey right now and Ive heard that the bitch pin is even crazier with all the extra ix bits in the way. Ive been looking into the z3 shifters too, does the 1.9 need to be bent at all to fit the ix? I also heard you have to remove the vibration dampener or some piece right?

it's actually the same with the transfer case out of the way. a long flathead worked fine for me, didn't have trouble at all with that one.

the Z3 1.9 is the same shape as the ix lever. you can't really make it longer because the transfercase is right below the lever. the ix also has no vibration dampener. there is a rubber peice on the end of the transfercase but it's not in the way.
