So i read in a GRM article that a cone filter in the engine bay without a heat shield actually robs 5 whp, so i bought some silicone intake tubes and clamps (at www.siliconeintakes.com, totally awesome high quality stuff) and re-routed my intake to make it lower.
First I had two 90 degree bends routing the cone filter right behind the fog light thusly:

At that location the filter can get the best air it can possibly get, but according to the Butt Dyno there was no noticeable power difference, just increased noise, which actually made the car feel slower.
So I figured all the added hose adds a ton of air drag, and I was worried about rocks punching holes in the filter, so I removed the lower portion, a 90 bend and a length of aluminum pipe, and simply put the filter on the end of the aluminum pipe that was going straight down.
The filter is temporarily being secured from being shredded by the alternator with zip-ties, but later on I will find a less ghetto solution.

once again, no noticeable Butt Dyno difference, but at least now the filter won't be eating rocks or drinking water. (as much, anyway...)
