I read in his blog that the controls are not fully functional as the leads were not extended. But since he neveradjusted them anyway, he just left it with a reduced range of movement.

You're right abotu him not making new cables for that set up but you can easily get some made at Speedscreen in Ascot vale/Flemington (in Melbourne Australia, for our American friends) and they are not so expensive.

I am biased too, but I havent liked any setup as I do mine with the screen in the lower section with full touch control ala a vehicle hub.
