I believe very much that the bmw e30 is an astounding car in the area of safety. Having my first real accident with it, the damage wasn't as bad as it could have been. I am happy for this man that at autobahn speeds to have walk away safely from the scene. God bless the e30 and you :]

My mom got in two accidents when she got both of hers back in the day. One was when a drunk driver smashsed straight into the side of the car at a four way intersection when she stalled and walked away without a scratch...the car was so bad it was totaled and this was back in '86 when it was new. Then another time when driving 80 on the freeway in the rain. Some guy moved into her lane pushing her on to the center divide and it threw her into 360's... car was a wreck and she walked away without a scratch. Sorry to hijack... glad your ok OP!
If you actually do some research, the e30 got pretty crappy safety ratings when they were new. The thing that makes them safe is the difference between ACTIVE vs PASSIVE safety.

BMW;s in general are not great crash cars. In terms of avoiding accidents and pulling awesome manouvers (sp?) they are considered one of the best manufacturered car in the world. What makes them so special is the stock setup that they have from the factory which includes awesome handling, near 50/50 weight dist., and power that wont' get the owners in too much trouble with speeding (at least no with the M models). In order to avoid an accident, the diver must actively participate in proper braking, steering and acceleration. When executed correctly, almost any driver can get out of any situation. but the key here is being ACTIVE. This is also why BMW offers driving schools so that drivers can become better at even daily commuting.

Volvo's OTOH offer PASSIVE safety, where most of their cars suck in terms of handling, braking and acceleration (I'm mostly referencing the non R models). Here they offer a plethora of airbags, side beams, and other crap to make the driver feel safe without having to actively participate in crash AVOIDANCE. This is generally what has kept Volvos' selling for decades, people beleive them to be fantastically safer cars, where as of the last 10 years or so, they have been equalled and been surpassed by many Japanese makes and models. This is essentially why they are always offering expensive gadgets to avoid the driver from getting injured in an accident.

Personally I enjoy driving and enjoy bing involved in avoiding accidents, which is why I choose bmw.

This would explain why I feel safer driving my MR2 or E30 than an SUV...but I haven't been hit yet either. Some accidents are unavoidable no matter how good you can drive.

On another note, I wonder if the OP got what the car is worth (to him) from the insurance company. I'm rolling around in an E30 that has 5 times the KBB value of money in it.

and sorry if i misunderstood this but off for a year for suspension and bushings? i'm doing more than that and i might be pushing a week tops if i add up all the time in the last three weeks i've actually spent working on it,...............and that's with me working like i'm an hourly union guy.

That was kind of a d-bag post.

OP, That accident turned out a lot better than it could have. Best of luck with the healing process and getting a replacement!

orly? how, because i said that sucks, because i asked for the engine, or simply because it took a year to rebuild the suspension?
I'd rather bag your mom than my car :D

I would be willing to bet here in Germany NOONE has full coverage on an e30-- and if someone does, you will be really lucky to walk away with 1000 dollars.

Right you are, except for maybe E30 M3's and only with limited mileage...my wife didn't even want to put full coverage on our 04 Corolla Verso. I have only liability on my Touring, and it's still like 400/yr.
