I find that very easy to believe. I've seen some very minimal reinforcing done to converted struts (compared to the way they come from the factory). Any manufacturer in particular? I'm just curious..

Mine were stock though with GC plates welded in place of the upper perches.

Do you think you will try to get the city/county to help since the road apparently sucked? Or will you be avoiding that because it has modifications?

I'll be submitting a damage report to Caltrans for sure.

So, after thinking about how/why this could have happened.

Since the caliper is bolted to the hub, and that is directly attached to the wheel, I think the caliper came off/broke/whatever, which cause the rest of the collateral damage.

If the shock tube broke, the ball joint broke, or the tie rod got fuxored, the caliper would have just stayed attached to the hub, since it has no direct relation to any of those parts. I would bet that something caused the caliper to come off, jamming it into the barrel of the wheel, causing such an immense amount of force/blunt trauma, that the other bits broke as a result.

Also, sorry to hear of this, Danny.

Could be but, I don't really see how it could have sheared the bolts the way it did. One of the bolts is still in the caliper carrier, sheared clean off.

But what could have contacted the caliper to break it off? It's attached directly to the hub.

                        The shearing does seem fishy.

Is only one bolt still in the carrier? Perhaps one fell out and that caused the caliper to flip up enough for the wheel to catch it and shear the other one off?

I guess it doesn't really matter at this point.

Does it appear to be easily fixable? As in, just pulling the borken crap off and bolting up new stuff?

Well without the ball joint, the strut tube could have broken and then the only thing holding the hub was the tie rod. If everything were to rotate together and jam the caliper into the wheel, maybe?

Yeah I was thinking maybe this too. Should be pretty straight forward, but I'm going to do both sides for fear of the other CA being suspect. I think I may need a new rack too.

Damn, man. The wheel is the rear shame imo. Everything else is readily available and pretty easy to replace.

Hope you have it on the road again soon and there's no other unseen damage.
