Good shit Matt. I don't know if I ever had a chance to check out that turbo car before you sold it. Guess I'll see it at the carbque.

Why did the engine blow up

with 10k on it? The ride coming from the hands of an enthusiast and "shop owner" from PA this just begs the question:

Are all turbo M20s doomed to premature failure?

or was it because the engine was just old that the turbo was the nail that sealed the coffin?

Would be great to discuss the pitfalls and proper maintenance of these things even if its just conjecture. You eluded to a few things already but I would love to hear from turbo owners who use these things as dds. Plenty of turbo car from various makes are reliable.

Car looks stunning as always Matt. Congrats on keeping her as on toes.

I've got 60K on a rebuilt to stock specs m20, turbo'd from day 1 running ~10lbs of boost. Spark plugs show no fouling, and car never eats any oil. I think the m20's are plenty strong. You've gotta keep in mind that (at least my car) only sees full boost under WOT. During normal driving, i rarely boost and if I do its really not more than about 5lbs. How long will my motor last? Not sure. I'm sure it really depends on how hard I beat on it. When I go stand alone I may just crank up the boost to either 12 or 14psi b/c of how well its held up at 10. The motor was originally rebuilt at 100k b/c of a blown head gasket (1st owner). So there is something to think about. But then again, I really don't know under what circumstance this occurred? I'll be honest, I think as long as my tuning is good and I keep driving it the way I do I feel I can squeeze out at least another 100K on top of what I already have.

I really can't say for sure what happened or why the head cracked. It's something the happened during the time I didn't own the car. You have to understand that the reason the engine failed was due to mixing coolant in the oil, it had nothing to do with the original rebuild of the engine. He could have simply over heated it for all I know. Another factor could of course have been the fact that is was never properly tuned. Simply adjusted to run decent. I now see the difference in these two things. Not only with reliability but in power delivery as well.

No sir, Derek (blueapplesoda) tuned the car and rented the dyno time at a shop in Canoga Park.

Awesome man. Did you get a video of it on the dyno? Or do you ahve a video of it in action? I'd love to hear how it sounds.

And do you have any plans on boosting more? I would think that you would end up wanting more... especially since it isn't running on motronic any more.
