    Thanks!

    M10 is definitely here to stay, can't wait to have my new engine rebuilded.

        I am so jealous right now, you have no idea. Beautiful car, can't wait to see it with the MTech kit on.

          M10 is fun. I kinda wanted to go with a 2.0 block and dual sidedrafts or turbo on my 318i but took the cheap and easy route with an M50 swap. Looks simple and awesome.

            @Brutus87: Thanks!

            @Nsquared97: Thanks! I can't wait to have the mt kit installed too, unfortunately there are some more urgent things to handle, like rust and a dying engine.

            @Roysneon: That's exactly why I'm keeping my sidedrafted M10, love the uniqueness of it. M50 also is a lot of fun but is done many times before. As far as I know I have the only sidedrafted E30 M10 in Holland, and I know 1 guy who is working on it.

              318i and 316 have the same 63cc combustion chamber heads. 316 has slightly lower comp pistons. I can't remember whether it was compression height or dome height that made the (small) difference. If you're sticking to E30 piston/heads , the most efficient way to raise compression is to shave off the block , so that there's 0,8mm piston-head clearance (pistons are 0,5 over the deck)and to use 18i pistons. And you'll need all the compression you can get with a 292.

              And you need not believe me , check the Mahle engine parts catalogue

              That aside , nice project with the right choice of engine :up:

              Any hp target for the engine?

                @Petrolhead:

                I thought the 316 block had higher compression because of the 'piano top' pistons:

                But it could be the guy who told me had it wrong.
                I will measure it before the block is going back together, thanks for the heads up!

                I don't have a hp target, I will see how much comes out :p

                  Just to be precise with terminology , "piano top" pistons look like this :)

                  130-140 should be doable. If you raise compression by shaving off the head/block , be sure to have an adjustable cam gear (totally DIY stuff) and pay attention to timing..

                    Haha, I heard something about piano-tops and assumed I have them because they look a lot like them. But it seems I have the mild variant of them, another thing learned today ()

                    It seems like you have quitte a bit of knowledge in tuning M10's so if you have some more information you want to share with me that would be appreciated!

                      I have built zero M10 engines but I've spent a lot of time talking to people who have, and asking dumb questions. And already way too much € buying parts. Check out my project thread to see why.

                      As for sharing information , that's the reason why I asked if you have a horsepower target. According to your target , answers may vary. :)

                        You have a nice project going I see, I will be following that!

                        And about that hp target, 130-140 seems to be right. Just enough to show the 320i's (and maybe 323i's) my taillights :p

                          1) Engine brought into good basic condition. (Try to google E30 Factory Repair Manual. It's somewhere in the interwebs). For ~130hp you don't need any fancy parts. Exhaust manifold , fancy rockers etc.
                          2) As much compression as you can get (and as I said, shaving off the block and / or head changes timing..) especially with a hotter cam. And if you do buy the 292 , get also the springs that are supposed to go with it. Those rockers do not like valve float.
                          3) Those Dellortos you have, adjusted/tuned by someone who really knows their shit.

                          As for beating 6 cyl cars , you'll catch them in the next corner because they'll be off throttle, happily understeering :D

                            1) Already doing that, engine is currently spread out on the workbench! No fancy parts sounds good, and by good I mean cheap :)(since I'm a student). I do have a exhaust manifold though :p

                            2) Probably gonna shave the head just a little to make sure it's straight, so not very much compression gained. Main reason for me to not buy a hotter cam is the fact I have to buy other springs/rockers with it and that is going to make it 2-3 times as expensive.

                            3) Definitly doing that!

                            Don't think I need corners for beating 320i's, they're much heavier and have less horsepower :p (when my new engine is ready)

                              I like where this is going. I'm always down for the underdog builds as I am doing one myself.
