Hahahaha, owned by the stupidly undersized tires.

See, not only do they look terrible, but they lower your chassis quite a bit, too.

                      Wow, that blows man.

Now that the skidplate topic has been brought up, how effective are they against these types of mishaps?

                        Skidplate-pro and con.

The problem with a skid plate is the front mounting. There's nothing much up front to attach to. If you are going slow it scrapes and gives you a good warning. At 30-40 mph it damages the core support and pushes the skidplate into the pan anyway, possibly sucking in the inner fenders/frame rails. Of course, at 30-40 MPH you're screwed anyway. Pick your poison. I have run into one car that's worse in this regard than the E30 - an Alfa Spyder.

Andrew and I have been planing to make something very similar to that for my car for a while, but I might just have to get that one from Jon. I could easily fab it up myself, but I like the idea of supporting a grassroots E30 business, so I don't mind spending the cash.

i love how people try and blame things on stuff like tire size and suspension set ups. when really, it comes down to driver not paying attention. I'm sure it was very hard to see, but if i ever see anything that looks like it might creat a potention disaster, i slow down, hit the high beams, and scope it out. I'm probably in one of the lower cars here, too, and havent had any mishaps with pans/lips for over 2 years. Get off the cellphone, stop dinking around with your radio, and watch the road. maybe the germans were right in not even putting cup holders in the e30. I actually like my car for driving, not as a resturant/phonebooth/recording studio.

It sucks it happened tho, and maybe the city will help you out. Maybe find a popular car with the same oil pan clearence and take the info with you. If the city says that the height of the oil pan is of reasonable height, say that you found another popular vehicle that would hit it. might get them thinking...

hope that's all you need and you shut it off quick. reminds me of my oil pan mishap, except i ran over a large rock. my oil pan was a bit more smashed, my oil pump was broken in half and the rock did more damage to the rest of the underside before i finished running it over (not on purpose obviously). i shut mine off not even a second afterwards and everything is cool, new oil pump and pan and it still runs like a champ.
