It's the "mode" dial for the previous euro automatic transmission. Had a "sport" "economy" and "snow" settings if I recall correctly.
When I went 5 speed it looked weird if I removed it. I decided to keep it and figured I would wire something up to it eventually, like maybe a discrete kill switch.1976 2002, 1987 325is, s50 1991 touring, 1996 328i vert

- relocated battery to trunk tray to compensate for added weight of s50 up front (used the e36 donor car's battery cable for this. It was a stretch but it worked!)
