    86 325ES Build/Restore

Just signed up on R3V, & so far it looks like an awesome resource!

I picked up this ES last Tuesday. It was in what I would call fair condition. The motor seemed to run well, and the previous owner had owned it for quite a while and "he kept up on it". I saw some potential in it, and here we are. These were the known issues- Cracked dash, cracked, but still decent seats, a rough spoiler, a vibration at 30mph, the driver window was not working, the stereo was not working, a brake service light, the inspection light, the anti-lock light, a washer fluid light (PO claimed tank leaked), and the paint was faded/rough.

I got her home & went right to it. I reset the service lights, I found that someone had hooked up a short 12" overflow line off of the feed line to the squirters, easy fix for the "leak" and the service light. For the drivers window I went right to the switch. Popped it off and found it un plugged, master mechanic over here! Pulled the stereo, found the fuse blown, Nascar crew chief kind of stuff!

For the paint, it's a work in progress, it needs some serious love, but it's improving quite a bit. Unfortunately it has a few burned out spots that will not be revived with any amount of buffing.

His explanation was a vibration at 30mphs, the reality was the drive shaft punching the floor board on any decent load, at any speed. I ordered up a CCB and Guibo before I even got under it. My suspicions were right.

I had also noticed it did not sound too great. The exhaust pipe was completely broken loose from the muffler. I am not a fan of loud exhaust. I've had luck with Walkers in the past, and what I picked up is basically an oem replacement muffler. I ran out of time to really mount the muffler as nicely as I'd like, I am definitely going to tuck it up more.

Did a little more exhaust work. Again cleaning up someone else's mess. Deleted the Toyota resonator that had been put in at one point. It also had a horrible transition from a larger pipe to a smaller pipe that created basically a backstop for exhaust flow. Still nice & quiet but has a deeper tone.

The front shocks are hammered. I looked at a lot of options & decided to go with the Raceland set up. Im hoping they will hold me over until I step up to real coilovers. No complaints so far, great communication & quick shipping. Just waiting on the rear shock mounts at this point.

Near future plans are to tuck the bumpers, 17" wheels, tint the windows, and paint it black. I work for a company that manufactures fiberglass and carbon fiber body panels, so I'm planning on doing as much as I possibly can in carbon fiber. I also have a low mileage M50 sitting in my garage that I'm going to slowly start accumulating parts for the swap.

Sweet score. Luckily the plastics around the bumpers are nice and straight for the tuck.

Got this thing sitting right. The old front shocks were leaking & literally had no dampening. The ride is immensely better, it's a whole new car.

I sent an email for the add but no one responded, who knows maybe he changed his mind and forgot to delete.

The ad was more of a feeler to see what I could get for it. I honestly thought I was throwing out a ridiculous price that no one would respond to. I am definitely keeping it though.

It was previously repainted & whoever did it unfortunately did a horrible job. I honestly don't have much hope for it.

Nothing wrong with that. The car is coming a long nicely, keep up with the updates of the progress. Those carbon fiber/fiberglass parts sound like a cool project for sure, what kinds of products are you planning on getting out there? It would be nice if someone came out with a nice rear apron for the early model e30s ;D.
