    New garage mate

Got my wife a new car to keep the e30 company. So you will see it's a Range Rover, "wow must be nice" is what I'm getting from people so... I want to share how we got it.

Wife had a 2012 Outback we were making $500 payments on. We started taking Dave Ramsey classes and decided its time to get out of debt. Sold the Subaru for $20,500 and bought this 2003 Rover with 100k miles for $8,100. Paid off the loan. No more car payments and the wife is happy! On to credit cards now ...

Not yet but I know everyone says Rovers are tons of work. I have heard that with BMWs too. Guess what, the 2003 has all parts from an 02 X5! Motor, tranny, even the 6cd changer says BMW on it. I do all my own work ;)

I think Lucas the Prince of Darkness is still hiding in all British Nightmares. Good luck. No payment is great. Trying to pay down my principal on my houses. One pays for itself.

To be fair, the one he bought is newer which means more technology which means (potentially a lot) more stuff to break. Check out his posts about the Rover and the CarMax warranty he bought - great stuff.

Congrats on making the right moves for debt reduction. No car payment is a great step!

I have worked on a few and the air suspension is a nightmare. definitely recommend switching to arnotts spring conversion kit if you ever run into issues. I have replaced about 6-7 of them with the kits and very good quality. but like you said engine and trans wise its just BMW stuff which obviously pretty available and somewhat cheap

Just in time for timing chain guides, valve stem seals and valley pan gasket!

                  Keep it slideways!!

Old range rovers tend to break up often. Really expensive to fix. My buddy had that exact model, great ride, definetely a head turner if you change and add few stuff on exterior. Has bmw engine but transmission is the biggest problem you might face with.

One little recommendation, remove that ugly front grill and throw facelift grill for new look.

Very cool. Ramsey's no debt is the way to live.

Lots of people will never get it that you can get into a nice car very modestly if you buy it used and a couple years old. That approach along with DIY on maintenance and mods and its quite easy to afford to drive expensive stuff.

Insurance is super cheap as well since they are paid off and over 5 years old.

Edit - just noticed the repair nightmare comments.... I heard the same about my old Disco II. I owned it from 40k to 135k miles and it was not more finicky than my Euro M5, my fathers 95 540/6 or my Cayenne Turbo. Every car has its weak spots. You just have to get on those early before they steamroll into other issues.

I worked as a mechanic at a land rover dealer for 4+years when these were out of warranty, racking up miles, and starting to drop in price and condition.
The m60(?) engine RR's are pretty solid mechanically. The interior, ICE, and tech can be problematic. The plastic bits on the engine tend to get brittle and break. A proactive system refresh will save you a headache in the long run. Valley pan gasket is an example of a job to do on your terms, not after its sprung a leak. The rear coolant crossover pipe is also a pain to get to, so the gaskets there should be done at the same time.
Pixels in the cluster will be failing left and right, but who cares.
Air suspension is not that complex, and it can be maintained for a reasonable price.
As long as it's has all its recalls caught up, and hopefully had it's cat's replaced under warranty, they aren't bad trucks.
If you're on r3v, you're clearly not afraid of wrenching, and and clearly you can not only find a repair guide, but find the tips and tricks available from the communities. You will be fine with that truck. It offers a lot of comfort, and IMO, is the best looking modern suv.

Ha! Thanks for the link. I was just watching wheeler dealers with their Bentley and they replaced the grill to modernize it, thought yea I need to do that to the rover!

Awesome thanks for the input. 100% right, motor is good, interior bits eh not great but just cosmetic I can work on. And yea pixel dies? Who cares! Kids, wife, groceries all comfortable!

I love working on cars it's my outlet so I have a new project ☺
