Nice looking e30 and Range Rover. But.... I gotta lol at a Range Rover being part of your debt elimination plan. Getting rid of the high payment Subaru was a great start, but then you definitely dropped the ball. You'll be lucky if it doesn't cost you $500/mo to keep the Range Rover going.

Yea I know. I'll keep track and update you guys. It's a transition. Wife wasn't ready, so I said well we could get a Rover, Cayenne, X3. The Chevy astro van wasn't happening. So now if it costs $500 a month to keep running the Astro van moves up on the list ;)

I understand that! Reasoning with the wife is the greatest challenge known to man.

I'd rather be homeless with a RR then drive an Astro van. At least then I would be living down by the river in style.

I love the look of those older Range Rovers but I agree with previous comment- good start on debt reduction by getting rid of car payment... But I can guarantee you you will easily spend $500/month over the longer haul. My LOSER brother-in-law had one. It was a 2005 I believe. Problems started a little over 100K. He calls on me since he has no clue about anything mechanical...or for that matter much of anything. Says the dealer wants $1800 for a brake job and 2 of the air shocks/struts are shot- but has to buy all 4. That's another $5500. I hook him up with an indi shop who takes care of it for almost half. Then I tell him SELL IT! Even hooked him up with a little old lady selling her 3.0 X5 with 35K miles! But he "loves" his RR! Two months later the tranny shyts the bed. Over $5 large for a rebuild. But he fixes it anyway. And as they say, here's the REST of the story...
Why did I say LOSER? We find out a couple of years later that he was basically using money that we (family, friends) invested in his real estate developments to live on! I'm out $25 large- LOT of money to me... But other family members are out $100K ++++

I love the new addition. Would love to pick up a RR some day, but I'll probably need to sell one of my current cars first.

There is good debt and bad debt. Car payments & CC payments are bad debt. Nice move. but have fun replacing the air suspension on that beast

So I wanted to quote all the naysayers just in case they will get notified. Too many times threads like this don't get updated because of pride or whatever. So I have to say humbly you guys were all right in your warnings. I want to be sure others learn from my mistake.

Right after our 30 day return window, of course. One of the air struts blows. Not a big deal, order a reman unit and pop it in ~$350 back on the road. Noticed oil was disappearing fast, 2 plugs were caked in oil, and read about the M62 PCV issue. Autohausaz got me the parts I needed and again I was good to go. ~$164 including filters, plugs, pcv, oil seperator etc.

Next thing I know the car is sucking oil again, puffing white smoke so I find a reputable independent shop nearby and schedule an appointment for an inspection $150. The day before the inspection my wife calls me broken down on the side of the road in the RR. So I have it towed to the shop $90 -$50 towing coverage from insurance = $40.

Then the fun begins. And this post is already too long. The mechanic checks it out the next day and basically tells me it's a POS. There were 44 trouble codes in the system and he tells me the check engine light was disabled. They popped the led and it would cost $1200 just to replace the instrument cluster (which I could do). but he's saying even then there were so many engine codes it would cost a lot and we still wouldn't know what other problems may arrive. Says they bribed an emissions guy to pass it since it never would have passed with the light disabled. Try to return it, threaten a law suit is his recommendation.

Call the used car dealer, which of course we know there is nothing worse than a used car dealer. He of course denies it all and claims we disabled the light because we don't want the car anymore. Told us not to call him ever again and have our lawyers contact his.

All my lawyer buddies tell me the fees will be more than the car is worth. My only option is a complaint to the attorney general's office. We submit a complaint and get a form letter back a week later letting us know they will send a notice to the dealer but recommend we take private action. By the way I looked up the guy on county court records, he's been sued before and has a criminal and family court charge against him :rippedoff:

So long story short we got rid of the junker, traded it in for $4k so lost about $4k (registration fees transferred) got a GLK350 with 38k miles 1 owner, off lease and a 4 year warranty. But now making payments again, granted it's now $350 instead of $500 for the Subaru. Ramsey is great, debt is bad, but my wife and kid's security in knowing they have a reliable car and warranty since I don't have time for 2 project cars is worth it.

Bottom line I felt like a chump :stupidsign: Thought I was smart, well versed in cars and I got taken. I'm over it now since I learned a lot from this. Bring an OBD2 reader with you whenever buying a used car, if it has OBD2 :)

Man that really sucks, sorry to hear it. I love Rovers, I've had a few older ones over the years and still have my RRC which I love. I've considered getting an L322 but it would have to be an '06+. I'm not terrified of the 03-05's with BMW components but I know they're getting up there in mileage and sadly a lot of people who buy these cars second hand don't treat them well. It sounds like some negligent owner got a hold of yours before you and really cut corners instead of doing proper maintenance. You live and you learn, I buy and sell cars like its my job and unfortunately I've come out on the short end of the deal a time or two as well and I am a pretty savvy car guy, I think it happens to the best of us. Just a shame it cost you $4k+ and probably ruined the brand for you as I think the later model ones are generally better than the BMW variants.

Damn man, sorry to hear that. I don't know him personally, though you might reach out to Steve Lehto and see if he has any suggestions and/or if he thinks you have any recourse.

Thanks for being open about this in hopes of helping the community! Sorry that had to happen, worked at a dealer years ago and would always be weary of trade ins that people disabled the lights......easiest way is to turn to ignition and wait a few seconds and observe the lights ck engine, abs,srs etc.

Yea the crazy thing was the mechanic said they knocked out the separator between the battery light and check engine. So when the battery light came on at key turn it lit up both. The difference was the check engine light was now red when it should have been amber. Oversight by me.
