This morning at 6am, I sent off for a quick trip to TJ, Mexico, in search of a new paint guy. Two shops were recommended to me, and I was able to visit each and speak with the owners. I have a general idea of what each will charge, and the scope of work that will be completed, and the quality of the materials that will be used. I brought many photos of my car, but both owners want to see the cars in person, so I guess I'll have to bring it in for them to see.

Here are things I saw in TJ that were noteworthy.

This is where Ash gets his drugs.

And this is what happens when you are born a donkey but secretly wanted to be a Zebra your whole life.

I brought many photos like these, for the paint and body shops to see:

We drove a 4-door e30 into mexico, and as a test mule, we left it there to be repainted. Pending it's quality, I will then send the tii for it's own treatment. We had to walk across the border back into the US. I bought churros and ponchos and all that mexican shit that most people do. It was cool.

Then I bombed back up the hill to LA to grab these:

I had the offsets modified a bit. They aren't very deep, but I have a set of 195/60 tires on order that will help fill in the gaps. I think these will be nearly perfect under the tii. Next up is to have them stripped and powdercoated gray.

Tomorrow I'll probably rebuild the door cards and get most things in the doors lubed up and made pretty again.

I also found these two aluminum pieces. Best I can tell, these replace the stock, plastic pieces on the driver and passenger seats that allow you to push the seat backs, forward to gain access to the rear seat. These are aesthetic pieces that surround that particular seat lever.

These definitely look handmade, and have a really cool feel/look to them, being as they are raw with no detail. I don't know if they are appropriate for the tii, but I'll put them aside for a worthy car. I think they would look great on a set of black seats.

I feel the same way. Malaga is such a hard color to like, but once you get over that hill, it's smooth sailing. I really enjoy the color now. It's so 70s and strange, kind of like zoey deschanel or whatever the hell her name is.

But I spent this morning removing things, replacing things, and preparing other things for more things.

First, I cleaned up another roundie, non-silver dollar cluser. It's always good to have three or four of these as spares. I probably have 5 silver dollar clusters I need to go through. I hope to make two or three fully working clusters of the 5.

Then I decided to throw one into the tii, since the tii's current cluster has a non-working odometer that bugs me. So first comes out the under dash panels, which revealed an assload of wires, many of which are unconnected - that can't be good. But bonus, I found an ignition kill switch that works!

Cluster swapped and installed. Everything works. Score!

As per Jim G's request, I took some time to replace and repair the dome light door switch and add the little stopper thing. I happened to have three or four as spares so I chose the best one and cleaned everything up. After installation, everything worked perfectly. How nice!

Then I looked at the current heater/fan faceplates and decided that I needed to change or at the very least, clean these up. Luckily I had spares so I popped the old ones out, installed new ones, and cleaned up the old ones to bring back a very respectable, used condition. This cleaned set will find a home on a famous car, though I'll refrain from disclosing which car for now.

And after they were installed, I was left with these two, which cleaned up very nicely, but could still use more cleaning:

I still need to take these apart and clean them. I should remove that awful trim as well.

I also changed out the sun visors for a much cleaner set, and did a little spring-cleaning on the headliner (I'll need to change this completely).

I then removed the strut bar and disassembled the airbox of all hardware. These components will be sand blasted and re-powdercoated black. I'll have all hardware replated for that clean engine bay look. Next week I'll remove most of the aluminum and send it off for tumbling. This will give me room to futz with the kfish pump and possibly get another Warm Up Regulator in there, assuming it's having issues (which I think it is, but can't confirm yet). So many things are happening quickly in this engine bay.

I also have all parts to get started on the interior. I've sourced all necessary original vinyl to make one new driver seat, and have a few things on order from Esty. I have the door card rebuild kits, a fresh can of lithium grease for the window tracks, fresh graphite oil for the locking mechanisms, and lots of patience and elbow grease to do these jobs correctly.

Then once I can finalize everything I just mentioned, she'll go in for paint and trim rehab. I'll likely have her towed to Tijuana for that. I'm curious on what those guys can do.

Oh, today I dropped these off to my wheel guy: 14x5.5 steelies. I've opted to keep the original barrels and change the offset a bit. The centers will be pushed in about 3/4" and I'll run them with 195/60r14 tires. I'll refrain from going as deep as I did with the 13s. I love the look, but I also like that period-correct sunk-in look that these cars come from the factory, with.

GC is hard at work building up a second set of coilovers for this car at this time. Should be ready next week. I may or may not throw a SS IE exhaust kit on here, though I will decide that later. I'll probably throw on a spare set of 350mm rear drums as well. This car will get all the fun parts, while still keeping all stock parts on the shelf in the case of a necessary reversal. I still don't feel like I'm bastardizing this tii. I'm after a fun tii, and I think this is going to be the one.

I have a spare short-neck 4.10 open diff originally from my 71 1600 that I am considering building up into a LSD. I think it would be fun to have choices between a 3.64, 3.91 and 4.10 LSD, depending on what kind of fun I want to have that month.

I live for this stuff, man.

so hard that I've almost killed sebo at least once. Just ask him. I legitimately thought we were going to fly off a cliff at GMR. I immediately replaced all suspension and bushings and tires after that incident.

Today I spent a few hours cleaning most of these extra tii parts. I wanted to categorize what I have and what I can set aside as spares. I also got a sunburn doing it but I don't mind. I snapped these photos and went for a surf right after. So far it's a good day.

I left most things attached to the kfish pump because I want to know where most things go, and I can verify all the new hoses and gaskets currently on their way.

I like how clean they currently are. I took extra care not to get parts cleaner into the pump or alternator. I know these are both good working units at the present time. And it's nice to have two extra warm up regulators.

Parts are starting to show up now.

I don't believe that just because a car is rare or increasing in value, that it should be babied like a trophy. I drive them all, and I prefer to drive them hard.

Thanks! They are really fun cars. This one has good bones and tasteful upgrades, so I will continue on that path. The good news is all upgrades are reversible, not that I really care about such things.

I really love your car phreshkid! Hope the engine bay strip down goes well!
Thanks! You should see a few of my other other 2002s.

I managed to find a set of donor tii struts that are being shipped to Ground Control as we speak. The guys there will be cutting the tubes, welding on 50mm tubes, and preparing the for the full coilover treatment. These will find a home on the tii, allowing me to shelve the complete stock strut housings, struts, calipers, rotors, and hubs.

Once all of those are off and wrapped up/put away in storage, I'll throw on a new set of GC coilovers, 77-79 big bearing e21 hubs, e21 vented rotors, and 528i calipers. This is the current "bbk" for tii's, allowing for vented rotors which dissipate heat better than the solid tii rotors. Not to mention that you can't even get tii rotors currently (NLA for a long time). I'll have the brake booster redone and checked, coupled with a new tii master cylinder and a rear 350mm drum brake kit, the car should stop nicely.

I'm going down the rabbit hole with this one.

I went through the tii today and made a massive list of things I want to complete. I broke it down into categories ranging from interior, exterior, engine bay, suspension, trunk, etc.

The list is massive in it's current state. I already started a massive purchasing effort on required pieces to complete this puzzle. Top priorities include fixing the coolant leak underneath the kfish pump and cold start/warm up.

Today I purchased a new brake master cylinder, door card rebuild kit, esty carpet kit, promise to send my seatbelts out for rebuild, all new coolant hoses, and all gaskets pertaining to the induction system. I figure I will rip the engine bay apart, replace all maintenance items, then put it all back together. I'll probably buy a few linkage items from the accelerator to the kfish pump. So much to do, so little time.

I'm probably heading to Mexico on Tuesday to get paint quotes for this car. I'm sick of seeing the top layer in its current state. I like nice things. This car deserves good paint.

I'm also gearing up to swap suspensions with the green car. I'll have to send my strut housings to GC for the treatment, then swap in the konis, springs/adjusters, and the camber plates and I'll be good to go. I figure the tii will the be the street hot rod considering all the upgrades it currently has. I'll purchase a stock set of strut housings in the event of a future sale. I'm sure the potential new owner will appreciate it, as will I knowing I have a spare, stock set.

But enough of that, here are photos:

Destroyed clear coat. I can fix that.

Notched frame rail. Is this normal or was it done for the AC compressor?

Random photos of the engine bay...for future reference. I plan on replacing and rejuvinating many parts (think radiator and new 400mm tropical fan)

And here is a photo of the aftermarket oil pressure sensor

Here is a photo of the coolant leaking from the braided coolant hose coming from what I believe is the warm up regulator, attached to the kfish pump. I'll replace and clean all of this.

Then I threw on one of the 14" steelies to see clearances. I will have them redone, but I don't want them widened to be flush with the fenders. I want them to sit under the front and rear stock fenders, with the 1600 in mind. So maybe they wont be as aggressively widened as the rears on the Opal Green 2002 currently.

Definitely ordering a fresh set of front and rear swaybar bushings.

I did four loads of laundry today after the airline lost my luggage yesterday. It showed up today so I had to run back to LAX to get it. I was a little nervous because I had all kinds of illegal things in there, but TSA never checked my bag. I have lots of Coca leaves and Cohibas now, which is cool.

During laudry, I took apart a spare cluster and cleaned the hell out of it. I'll end up doing the same to three other clusters. I believe they all work at this time, or at least they did when I pulled them from their cars.
