    RJSimz Sterling Silver 1990 325is

This build thread will be primarily used to keep up and record my maintenance.

    Story behind the vehicle:

I’m a Toyota guy through and through. I’ve owned a few 4runners and Tacomas. My latest Toyota being a supercharged 3rd gen 4runner that was my pride and joy (I’ll post pics below). Overland vehicles were more my style. What got me into BMW’s was actually my brother that had an E39 wagon (pic below as well). The more I saw it and road in it, the more I wanted to get into one. I started my E30 hunting adventure around November ’2018 for a clean example as my first E30, let alone my first BMW. Originally I was looking for either an alpine white or delphin grey 318is or 325is, which ever example was cleaner, I was going to go for it. While I was scouring the internet every day for a few months, one popped up on Craigslist located in Tallahassee which is about 2 ½ hours from where I live. It was a ’90 325is in sterling silver with 43K original miles on it from what the ad said. The ad had like 5 pictures of the vehicle on it and pretty much a one line statement about the vehicle. Something to the extent of, “one owner 1990 BMW 325is. Excellent condition with 43K original miles on it. Immaculate tender loving care for over 20 years.” And that was it. I’ve bought and sold many vehicles and we all know when they have little information on the vehicle (especially on CL) that it was probably a scam. So, I went on my way and kept scrolling. The very next day, the ad disappeared. I had taken a screen shot of the contact info when I saw it just in case. After having gone through so many ads and waiting for the right one to pop up, I figured I’d just give this guy a call. I called the number and an elderly woman answered. I asked if the BMW was still for sale and she said that her husband took the ad down because he was having second thoughts about selling it. I then proceeded to ask her if it was ok if I had a few words with him. A few minutes of talking and some convincing, I dropped everything I had to do that day, and I was on my way to Tallahassee before he could change his mind. I show up and the first thing he says to me was, “I was actually kind of hoping you didn’t show up!”. The vehicle was just as described and then some. It was an older gentleman, a graphics designer that worked from home, only drove it on the weekends, and the car was always covered. 43K miles on the clock with the odometer still rolling. Only downfall is that it’s an automatic (but it’s a good thing we could always swap it). I was just thrilled to see what I had the opportunity to purchase. No rust, no body damage but a few scratches, nothing major that I couldn’t fix myself. It was in excellent condition for its age. After test driving it and getting as much information about the vehicle from him, we struck a deal that was more than generous for what these are going for nowadays. He threw in the OEM BMW car cover, OEM radio that he said worked but was having issues with static, and a box of new radiator lines. I don’t know about you guys, but before I sell one of my vehicles that I’ve put days and hours into let alone owned it for almost 30 years, I get attached to it, then when I see it leave my possession, it’s a punch in the gut. I felt that with this guy. He asked to take a picture of myself and the vehicle before I left and he returned the favor.

Phone camera lens was acting really weird so it looks like I edited the picture of the previous owner. Not the case.

After a quick wash it’s all tucked in and safe in my garage. Only thing I found was damaged spoilers. Rear can be repainted and will be ordering another OEM front lip. Few oxidation bubbles on the side mirrors but nothing that’s in indefinite need of replacing aesthetically. Engine bay is really clean. Looked untouched.

Wow, amazing find with such low miles! Looks like it's been extremely well kept over the years. I'd say 5 speed swap it, refresh all the bushings and leave it stock at that mileage. A true survivor. Awesome.

What a find! As these cars get harder and harder to find unmolested, its going to be the autos that are the sought after because as you mentioned, its easy to swap them and the previous owner typically didnt have the performance aspect in mind when they bought an auto E30... My last two were both auto, swapped the first one and have plans to swap this one too.

So besides the manual swap, what else is on the agenda?

A fantastic find. Looking forward to seeing the progress. Also a Toyota guy: built 2013 4runner and a supersized 2017 Tundra.

Yup, swap a 5 speed in, and just leave it stock otherwise, albeit refreshed as necessary.

That is one of the biggest questions I have for myself. I'd love to keep this vehicle in my possession for as long as I can. So, as far as my plans go, I'm looking to keeping this one OEM+. I have a perfect canvas right now and I don't plan messing with it too much other than refreshing it. Everything on this vehicle is original and I'm finding it harder and harder to even start looking for parts for the manual swap. As far as ROI, would you think I'd get more return if I swapped it or kept it as it is? It's not that I plan on selling it, if ever, but as always in life....S(*& happens.

That early 5th gen boxy body style T4R is my favorite other than the 1st gen 4runner and the 3rd gen. You have good taste!

Thank you guys for the kind words. I'm am beyond satisfied with this purchase. This will be a fun one for me. I'll try to keep this thread as updated as possible and throw in as many pics as I can. One day I'll invest in a better camera than my iPhone, but unfortunately, I'd rather spend it on car parts! For now, I'll just take advantage of other people taking high res pics for me at meets and so forth. ;)

I figured this would be the majority vote and I agree completely.

Nice find! Seems like a few people have found really clean, stock e30 examples recently. Clean and OEM-ish is a great way to go with it! :D

Haha, if I can get it just as clean as yours I’ll be happy.

A day after I got the vehicle home, I went through the whole vehicle. PO left the original receipt of purchase which I thought was awesome. I can’t imagine paying this much back in ‘90. Looks like he traded in a ford escort. I crossed out some personal information for confidentiality reasons. I’ll be keeping this in the records.

First things first was the start of the refresh. The PO emailed me a Microsoft Word document with all of the work that’s been done to the vehicle. The timing belt hasn’t been changed since 2011 so I went ahead and ordered the timing belt kit and some other goodies from ECS tuning.

                          Box o’ parts:

New genuine BMW roundel although I was kind of disappointed that the roundel wasn’t as stout as the original one I took off. Old one I believe was all metal...this one..plastic?

And the start of the timing belt/WP/seals and other “while you’re in there” parts. Highly recommend using https://classicbimmerbits.com/e30-ho...t-replacement/ as a guide if it’s your first time changing everything out.

Took the timing covers off and was glad to change it out. Buncha small cracks on the back side, slipped it out and gave it a good twist...ripped right through.

                          Nice and fresh...

Had a “whoops” after installing the new seals for the camshaft. Torqued the camshaft seal bracket down and don’t you love the feeling of the bolt getting loose when you’re tightening it down? Yeah...snap! I was just BARELY able to fit my drill in there to extract the rest of the bolt. Quick trip to ace hardware and replaced it.

Threw the brand new radiator lines on from the box the PO gave me after a quick wash to take the fresh powder off.

Ran to the BMW dealership and purchased 2 gallons of BMW blue coolant. Didn’t know they gave a military discount so that’s good to know for future reference. Serviced/bled the system and it ran like a champ.

Noticed a rip in my intake boot and replaced it with a brand new OEM one.

And to finish off the job because you know the job was never done unless you put the sticker on, right? I ended up ripping it off and throwing it on the fuse panel.

Can’t get enough of how low the miles are on this thing.

I’ll get around with doing the oil pan gasket later on. I noticed a few drips a night on the card board I laid out underneath to monitor it. PO used 10w30. I researched and looks like everyone recommends 20w50. I’ve since used the recommendation and actually changed it last night with Castrol GTX 20w50 with a Mobil1 filter. Figured I’d monitor it again with the thicker oil hoping that maybe it would stop the drips. We’ll see.

Nice find! Its always fun buying a car and having a story to go along with it. Looks like you're on the right track with it. Doing a manual swap will definitely increase the value if you ever decide to resell.

Thanks. Only thing that worried me was messing with the originality of it. I assume that enthusiasts would prefer a manual anyways. Thanks for the advice.
