US spec M3 production started in 3/87. Although these cars were sold as '88 cars, and have 'J's in the serial numbers, everything about them is '87 spec. They have the early style radio head units, the circuit breaker swtich for the windows is next to the hazard switch instead of next to the shifter, some minor wiring differences, and of course they have sealed beams instead of ellips.
After 9/87 when the normal '88 model year started, the M3 got updated with all the later style stuff.
Congrats on the M3. Henna's are coveted cars so take care of it. On the subject of the ellipsoids and early production M3's...in addition to sealed beams they also had steel control arms AND standard non offset bushings. Most have since been replaced with the offset version.
"I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj
Wow, I can't believe you bought an E30 M3 from it's original owner. That would be a dream for me. May I ask how many miles are on the car and if it is all original? Looks amazing.
