why can you put a downing atlanta SC on but no-one will turbo it, because of the high compression ratio.
It's not the high compression ratio that's the ass pain, that can be fixed easily with one of VAC's thicker headgaskets and/or low cr pistons. The M42 is rarely turbocharged because few people have done it, so there are no bolt on kits that make it easy. Engine management is also a pain in the ass if you haven't messed with a standalone before and they're $$. Then tuning. The Tec3 setup with Vias tuning is definitely the method to go with if you can afford it.

Awesome car! I envy your boost :(

umm... the M60 is a V8 engine so that would be a "No" but the displacement if it had stock S52 pistons would be about 1.9L. However, that's not how I got there.

Guys, please keep in mind that this is an entry into one of the most competitive BMW Club Racing classes (D Modified). Everyone else is running high strung M50 based engines (2.9L dsiplacement limit) or S14's. We think we've got a total cost and cost/performance advantage. It took a fair amount of research to pull this recipe together and we're a bit reluctant to share the "secret sauce." There are no M components under the hood and where we did have to purchase custom parts (pistons, etc.) we only needed 2/3rd's of what we would with a 6 cylinder.

Ive been meaning to ask, but does that think have an oil cooler or are those lines off the oil filter housing for the turbo?

It does have an oil cooler. There is also a line that is an oil supply to the turbo. The -10AN lines are to and from the cooler, the smaller line is to the turbo.

So two weekends ago we practiced for, qualified in, started and finished our first race.

We had a problem with overboost and it creeping up to 27psi. My calcs are that it was putting down over 400 RWHP on the front straight.

Here is the car in race livery...

Interesting project. The light weight of a four banger, and the power of a well developed six. Nice. How many radiators do you run? Would you have any dynosheet to show how the power/torque curves look like? Is it an all-or-nothing motor or were you able to get some drivability?
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

This is the stock head with a mild tune at 15psi. Without the boost creep it remains very driveable. You can modulate boost with the throttle, although throttle oversteer is very easy to find :) Keep in mind that this is on a Dyno Dynamics dyno and is by most estimates about 15% more conservative (understated) when compared to a Dynojet. There are a lot of gains to be made with an electronic boost controller, better tune, and improved head.

I have a head that is about to go to the machine shop and I'm looking for the proper cams. The head will get a mechanical lifter conversion, larger valves, etc. as well as the new cams.

The car has a Zionsville E30 competition, all aluminum radiator with their standard puller fan. It has a large intercooler and we upgraded the oil cooler from a 4 pass aluminum compeitition cooler to an 8 pass of the same design. Oil temps dropped from 260+ to 200 or so and water from 210-225 to 180. Intake temps, even with 27 psi of boost were about ambient.

Falken Hanabi from Edge Racing. 17x9 ET 20 but don't go here unless you like to cut metal. They required about 12mm spacer in front and 6 in the rear.
