November 2019 Car of the Month: mitchlevy7

** Editors Note: Ive been watching Mitch build this car for years, starting with an entirely different chassis and an aluminum block M52. Car has been evolving for years and it finally seems to have gotten where he wants it. Another E30 that the owner built to their own tastes, showing that you dont have to have a mint $60k car to earn a spot as our November 2019 Car of the Month! Congrats!***

Story Behind the Car: After building a more "stanced" e30 vert, I had decided that I wanted to start building an e30 that will eventually get me more into track driving and something fun for the backroads. Sometime in college I acquired a white 318is with an aluminum block m52 in it. It was a blast and but the body wasnt the cleanest. Nonetheless, I started collecting parts, including a iron block m52. By this time, I was working for a performance shop a few days a week while finishing up the last few years of my engineering degree. As time went on, I eventually rebuilt the iron m52 for boost and collected enough parts for the build. After a ton of work, I eventually got the car somewhat running before I had to leave for the summer to Japan for a study abroad program. During that time, I had sold my daily and picked up a 89 Zinno 325i coupe. Long story short, 2 cars became one. The body of the zinno 89 and the engine and drivetrain of the 91 alpine car. The next 3 years would be a balance of time, energy and money to get the build on the road. I replaced every suspension component, had as many parts powdercoated as I could, changed turbos, changed ECU's, changed headgaskets, rebuilt the exhaust, built the wheels. I wanted it to be a testament of what I could do.. In late 2018, the company I worked for moved from Maryland to South Carolina. In an attempt to not have to trailer the car down in pieces, I took some time to knock out the last 5% to get it a running and driving car. In July and August of 2018 I was finally able to take it for a test drive and fast forward to 2019 and I have been driving it to and from work a few days a week and taking it to cars and coffee on the weekends. The car still has a small list of issues to be addressed and a few boxes of parts left to be put on, but it is by far the funnest car I have ever owned and 100% worth it.

An old Maryland car I have never seen before! Love the rake on it. This is how to set up and aggressive e30.

Did you need that offset to prevent the tires from rubbing, or was it a stylistic choice?

The front ends up at -4 (with the 12mm spacer) so that the nuts on the inside of the wheel clear the brakes. The rears were just how it ended up throwing the 4" lips on to replace the 3" lips. This is how I got the wheels. There pretty rare and hard to find in 4x100 with e30 center bores. I didn't really have the money at the time I was building them to buy new lips. Looking back I would have done a 3.5" lip in the rear and added that 1/2" to the barrel or maybe even just ran smaller tires.

Congrats! Slick car. If you're in MD you should bring it out to NCC BMW CCA cars and coffee at BMW Catonsville this Sunday (11/10).
