91 318is with a new release on life.

I got this project here in the garage. Finished up J's swap and this moved in on the same day it left.
Its a 91 318is thats getting a M20 swap. The motor is ripped down to bare block and everything is at the machine shop getting work. Head is getting a full rebuild. The intake, VC, timing covers and some other parts are getting hot tanked. Most likely they will get powder coated some color.
Figured since all of that was out and we had time this weekend to mess around it would be a good time to spray the engine bay to clean things up a bit.

Sorry for all of the photos. I guess its good to share right?

So anythings, When the car showed up it had no motor in it. This is what it looked like.

Took the time to spray some cleaner on the panels and let it sit for a good 30 minutes.

Look, after an hour of scrubbing the panels. Thanks to Jason I might add. The engine bay is clean.

But not clean enough for our liking. So some of the brackets not needed was removed. 3 of us sanded the bay down to make sure it was ready for some fresh paint and then it got masked off.

A little sealer primer to make sure everything came out nice..

Then it was time to let the color fly.

Now after the color flashed it was time to shoot the clear.

Now with all "most" of the tape pulled off.

Ok, So today I got most of the engine bay back together. Took most of the day to do it since I had to be safe not to scratch the paint. I only let it bake for an hour with the heat up to 95.

I love fresh paint. How about you guys?

Id like to take the time to thank Jason, Travis, Jasons girl and my girl for all of there help today.

So for the suspension we got some weitec 60/40 springs.

MrEricT approves of this mod 100%.

This is the only two photos I took after the springs was installed. I know they suck, my camera actually sucks and takes shity photos.

There will be more added to this post since 90% of the suspension needs to be replaced. This car will be getting all stock parts.

    UPDATE: 11/24/09

My order from fap came through the day after I placed it. Super fash shipping.

All laid out on the floor.

    Old junk.

    Installed photos.

Im gonna have to place another order with fap prolly next week after the holidays to order the rest of the parts to get the motor and trans in the car.
But thats it for now. maybe some updates on the motor build if the new cam comes in.

    12/06/09

I was making up a few rear shock tower brackets today and decided I would make one for myself. Im not done yet, actually still got a bit to do.
But this is what I got done.

ok, well I had an M20 from J's car that I did the swap in 2 weeks ago. So this is the motor Im going to use in this car.
I ripped it all down early last week and took some parts to the machine shop.
Had the head checked for cracks, surfaced, valve seals and a valve grind.
At this time I had the intake, timing covers, valve cover and a few other pieces hot tanked.
I dropped all of that stuff off at the powder coater earlier today to get done in black wrinkle finish. Should have it back early next week.
So while waiting on them parts to come back I figure now would be a good time to clean and paint the block.
      On to the photos.
      Dirty bare block.

All scale, dirt, grease removed from the block.

      Primer.

      Paint/Clear.

      Pics of the head.

Pic of the head sitting on the block.

      UPDATE: 11/25/09

All the parts came back today from the powder coater. The intake, valve cover, upper and lower timing covers, thermostat housing was all coated in a wrinkle black. Came out pretty good. We didnt want it to be a flat black and course. So this is what we went with for an easy cleaning.
Also installed all new bolts and washers to make things a little more fresh.
On to the shity pics my camera takes.

      UPDATE 11/27/09

Motor is in the car. Cam is still stuck in customs since the 22nd. I have no idea when its coming.
The wiring harness and a few other pieces will go on tomorrow.
Then its time to play the waiting game and work on the interior.

      12/6/09

MrEricT came down and helped me on my cam install. He was also nice enough to adjust the rockers. Good little ninja.
Got that all done and installed the VC for good now. Put in some new exhaust studs in prep for the headers that will be here this week.
Eric finished bolting up the rebuilt alt, belt, crack pipe and the dizzy cap. I tossed on the wires earlier today.
      Some pics.

      12/15/09

I bought a set of equal length racing dynamic headers off a forum member last week and they showed up today.
These headers was made for the E34 but can be made to fit the E30 with some work.
When I was looking into how I was going to do it I came across this thread/forum here.

I got to thinking about how and the hell I was going to go about this.

So the headers showed up today and I went to town on them. First thing I did was cut off the end of the header because I did have the down pipes.
I went to install them how thy are suppose to be and I ran into a few problems. First with the front header it hit the motor mount arm. With the E30 and E34 mounts being different I knew it was going to work there.
Then I went to install the rear header and bam, hit the firewall and it wasnt even close to fitting at all. So I was like well, Why dont I just switch the front to the back and the back to the front. So I did and everything fit so much better, but I still had issues. The front header wouldnt allow me to install the oil filter like normal. So I had to turn thr housing around to fit. I went to put the stock filter on and it was to long and rubbing on the CPS bracket. I went to the auto stock and picked up an E30 M3 filter and now the issues with the filter and oil cooler are fixed.
The rear header was hitting the firwall like I said before so I had to either do one of two things. Cut the shit out of the header and bend things around or beat a lump in the firewall. Well needless to say the firewall got hit back about 2 inches. I went crazy on it now so when I went to weld the exhaust I can get the welder in there to get a solid weld all the way around. When Im done welding I will go inside the car and beat it out a littler so it doesnt so so bad.
Anways Im sure you are all tired of reading by now, so on to the photos.

looking good man! Re-spraying the engine bay is where it's at :D

Where did you buy that stuff? $95 each for control arm with no bushings seems a lot! I paid 140 bucks for both with M3 offset bushings...

Its 95 per control arm. When it says it doesnt come with mounting bracket or bushing it is talking about the CAB that mounts to the frame.
As for that site, I wouldnt buy anything from them. The prices are right, but they have no brand name on any of there parts.
Last time I talked to them to ask them what the brand was. I got this answer "I DONT KNOW THE BRAND, ALL PARTS MEET OR EXCEEDS OE SPECIFICATIONS." That dont work for me.
