    R3v in T-minus...

It's said that every new driver crashes their first car. I hope that isn't the case.

My parents bought this car in 2003, it had around 115k on it, and it had around 110 small golf-ball sized dents on all over. It got awesome gas mileage due to those dents, though. ;)

It'd been an awesome car for us, and never let us down. It took us down I5 at 75MPH while still getting 35+ MPG. My dad, coming from 1600s/2002s/E21s, absolutely adored the car, and loved the sound of the M42. When I started driving, I preferred this car over my brother's '08 WRX TR. It was a happy car. It had the smiling front end, the quick responsive steering, and the rev-happy M42.

In '08 I had the car resprayed by my friend, who owns a body shop. The dings/dents were removed, and it came back shiny and fresh.

(That's from around a month ago.)

In May, I was perusing the SF bay craigslist when I found a pair of grey sport seats from an 89 E30 M3 for sale, drove down the next morning and snagged them (from a BayE30/R3v member who has a S50 swapped 325i)

The car now has around 145k miles on it, and although we always kept up with general maintenance through our mechanic (Awesome German dude who used to work on the E30s when they were new.), it had a few things that needed to be done.

Friday night, I sent Blunt a message asking about some parts. Around $2900 later, this stuff showed up:

Missing a few things like the Z3 2.7LTL rack, new tie rod ends, and the rear plate filler, but they are on their way.

I did sit in the middle of the pile of parts and make car noises.

    I ordered a MarkD 91oct M42 chip as well.

I'm not a radical driver, and I don't drift/race on the streets, as I've lived first hand the consequences of a bad car accident through my mother. This is a car I grew up with for a good portion of my life, so I have no plans to crash it. I have no plans for angel eyes, giant gurney flaps, or even spinners.

I'll be updating this thread once I get everything installed and take some gud pichurs. Hopefully in the not-so-distant future I'll be snagging some wheels to make it look a little better, as well as some new lights to make it a little easier to see.
    :)

I also just wanted to say Thank You to Blunttech, they made ordering the correct parts beyond easy. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of C&B.

And another thank you to Lee Plato of Healdsburg/Windsor Collision Center(s). They've worked on a few of our cars, and they offer a life-time warranty. If you need bodywork in the Northern-California area, they are an awesome shop.

Yup. I went with the custom-valved Koni kit. I believe I went with the 440fr/625rear setup.:)

That's cool, good choice on the z3 rack, don't let anyone fool you into going with the '95 m3 rack especially since they're pretty much the same price. Looking forward to pics of everything slapped on, if your willing to make the drive you should visit Ryan in Auburn if you ever need someone to do work, but it sounds like you already have a guy.

Btw I think I see rear trailing arm bushings in the 3rd pic? If you didn't already get eccentric bushings, consider getting the camber/toe weld-on adjusters to put on at the same time. It'd also be a good time to get those brake lines near the differential replaced.

I consulted with Wh33lhop on the rack situation, and did tons and tons of reading. 95M3 rack FTL.

I'll hopefully be doing the work with a few of my friends, at my friend's shop. :)

Those are actually the spacers for the GC. I'll be doing the subframe bushings soon, however.

I was under the impression that the 95M3 rack was slightly more turns lock to lock than the Z3 rack but had a wider steering angle, which was preferable. What is the argument for the Z3 rack? Just out of curiosity.

This is mainly because of the different steering geometry of the '95 M3, as you recall they have a different spindle/control arm/CAB setup than the rest of E36 cars. Yes, it's 3 turns flat lock-to-lock but it's still progressive, and the overall degree-to-travel ratio is slower as there is less overall travel. Basically, on any given chassis this rack is inferior to the regular E36 rack despite the lower lock-to-lock number. I know you've read otherwise on E30 sites, and I have too. But, say it with me: screw the '95 M3 rack.

I was planning on ordering it through Blunt (Blunttech.com), because he had it cheaper, but I got it through Partsgeek.com because they had it in stock. It cost $450 to my door, with $175 return core, I believe. I'd definitely go through Blunt if I had to do it again, though.

I know how you feel, when I did my suspension I had a trip to go on and KNEW the stuff was at my house. Had to wait a full week, GRRRR!

Looks good and glad your are taking care of her!

Any plans in moving up to the 24v in the future? Or just a clean stocker with tasteful flare thrown in?

Any rate great start and nice 318is!

Got my Steering Rack from partsgeek.com, it got here in 1 day with their cheapest shipping method, but it only shipped from Cali. :D

Does anyone know a way I can check to see the lock-to-lock travel of the rack with it out of the car? I want to confirm it is the 2.7LTL before I put it in.

And I got my Tie-rod ends from Blunttech.com!

It's looking like I'll end up waiting a few days to install it regardless, and it's killing me. :)

I'm doing my best, but I have been neglecting my paint some-what. I park under a maple tree, and it's not nice to the clear.

I would love to do 24V, but I also love the handling of the car; the gas mileage, and the fact that even when I drive it balls-to-the-wall, I can still get 15+ MPG. If I did anything, it would be a low-boost drivable turbo, shooting for power around an M50.

                              Thanks!
