Was that done on a lathe?

Yes, turned by hand on a lathe. Then I tapped it by hand as well.

Did a few test welds to get a feel for the sheet metal. Here are the results:

                All nicely ground smooth.

Plenty of penetration on the back.

The entire bottom of the pan will be welded this way. Keep in mind I am doing this with 18ga steel and a MIG, not TIG.

Got most of the bottom welded on. Have to wait to do the last piece or else I won't have access to weld the pick-up tube.

                  Mock-up of the pickup tube.

This isn't the tube I will be using, I only used it to see how things would fit. I plan on using a piece of silicone tubing to join the tube that will be welded to the oil pan to the pickup itself. Need to buy some steel tube before I can go any farther.

Awesome fab work man. Im jealous of your patience to sit there and grind all the welds down super smooth as if it were all one connecting piece. I know for a fact that its pretty tedious work.

Actually, it took all of about 10 minutes. lol Angle grinder and a flap disk make quick work of it. It took a lot longer to fit the plate to the rest of the oil pan and get it held in place perfectly.

I am incredibly impressed with your fab skills, really wish I had time, money and a welder.

Have you mentioned if you're going to have some sort of a skid plate for that at all? I assume you would; wouldn't take much to dent and put a hole in that.

*edit, ok maybe not a hole, but you never know. Welding/grind job looks great.
