I hadn't seen that. While I appreciate the work put into it, I don't like builds like that because it really isn't an MGB any more, it's an MGB body on a custom frame and suspension. It might as well be a replica at this point.

Yeah, but you've gotta admit, ain't nothing wrong with an MG with better chassis, suspension, and everything else. :p

I like this car, and I wish I had the ability and patience to strip mine down and build it from the ground up (since it's my DD and I have no garage, it doesn't work). When's it coming to the picnic? ;)

Actually I don't have to admit. Have you ever driven an MGB? Even with stock suspension, they are incredibly fun, good handling cars. In stock form, I'd say they are about equal to an e30 with a cup kit, and even better with a few modifications.

That being said, I will eventually go to coilovers and a 4-link in the rear.

And I plan to drive it to the picnic the first year it is able to. :D

Good. Hurry it up, I want to show it taillights! :p

No, seriously, this thing is sweet. I want a ride when it's done.

I'm thinking an MGB with an M42 and an E30 with an M50 might be fairly evenly matched!

No, no one has in my opinion because it is no longer and MGB once everything but the sheet metal body has been changed.

Here is another example of NOT an MG:

What everyone who has never driven an MG doesn't understand is that it isn't about being the best handling/fastest/best car, it's about the feeling you get driving the car. Completely changing the car changes that feeling.

I plan to be way since rid of the M50 in another 18 months or so, but if he can make it to this picnic it'd be a fun gentleman's bet.

You're on an E30 board! I like my trailing arms too, but I can appreciate better engineering. Don't be hatin'.

You're the one hating on "inferior" technology of MG's. ;)

Ugh, bad news. I hadn't really torn into the engine yet as I didn't want it in pieces while I was fitting it in the car. Luke's thread about his M42 and the crankshaft play it had made me paranoid, so I went and checked mine. Endplay is 0.070" and one side of the crank where the thrust bearing is is toast.

                    BIG gap.

                    This side looks great.

What are my options? Obviously I could find a used crank in good shape, but could the worn spot be welded and re-ground? Are there different width thrust bearings available to account for the material that has been worn away (assuming I have the crank ground without adding material)?

Sucks dude. But the answer is clear: MM 2.1 rally motor! :p

(seriously that is my only input, sorry)

Already found another crank. Should be on it's way tomorrow.

Hey man, heard you were doing a rebuild on your M42? I have all the timing parts new if you want man.

Let me know. And this thread is AMAZING. I grew up with MGB's as my dad was a British sportscar nut, I have driven a few MG's in my life and they have all been such a blast. Stoked to see this all cleaned up!

Thanks, but I'm still a ways away from doing any work on the motor. I'm not even sure at this point what I will need as far as timing chain components go. I'm optimistic though as I didn't find ANY pieces in the oil pan.

                              Updates!

Was able to borrow a mill at the local college and got the plenum plate milled.

All the holes in the "frame" have been threaded, so it can bolt to the plate.

                              Sits nice and flush (hellaflush).

16 of these bolts hold the frame in place. Planning to powdercoat the intake manifold wrinkle black, so the stainless hardware will be a nice contrast.

Probably going to mail everything to my cousin to be welded tomorrow, so I should have it back shortly after.
