Heres my very general rule of thumb

6" rim 205 is large fitment
7" rim 225 is large fitment
8" rim 245 is large fitment
9" rim 265 is large fitment
10" rim 285 is large fitment

    Remove 20mm for square-ish fitment
    Remove 40mm for some stretch

If you can find the specs for the tires you are considering and look at "tread width" this will tell you how it is going to look regardless of the size. For example a hoosier r6 275/35/15 has a 10.1" tread width so it will be pretty square on a 10" rim.

    The 2002 in my sig is 13x6 w/ 205/60/13

235 toyo r888's are pretty wide.

    This is a 205 on a 10in. 949 6ul.

This is a 295 on a 10in. (doesn't look like it but, this is what is listed). It is bulging over some. I would probably shoot for a 255 or 265 with flares.

seems like 235s would be stretching pretty far

Thats supposedly a 235/50rX on a 10 inch wide rim...

Still a tire size noob, forgive me hahah.
Thats probably around a 285 or 295. I got 10.5 on the back of my Firehawk with 295s and they are just a little ballon to them but not much. Now upfront i got 9.5 with a 275 and its pretty square.

And this is a 235 on a 7 1/2 wide rim. 9's have to fit pretty well, no?

Your stretch/contact patch will be the same, but depending on the size sidewall, it can make it appear more or less stretched. So if you can find some 255s, that'd be closer to ideal.
