    Rebirth of a 2002 Racecar

    Restoration of the #5 car.

    History:
Car started out as a 1967 1600 that Jeff bought in 1987 as a street car with a blown engine. Converted to B-sedan spec., the car raced in VARA throughout the 90's. Since then it's been tucked away for the last several years as focus has shifted to some other race cars. Last week the covers have been pulled back and a fresh engine is in the works. I'll be posting as the car goes back together and starts racing again.

Here's some shots how it was in the early 90's.

Sweet shot at Willow springs on poll back in the day.

Here's how it stood early this week. A little dusty, but lots of potential.

Some of the goodies for the engine build.

BMW Factory race-prepped head otherwise known as the "Alpina" head. Heads came from a dealer closeout long long time ago are actually the same dealer whom we got the alpina flare molds off of (the original flares now reside on a car in the BMW museum). These are kind of unobtanium.

Note the Hemi'd chambers. These will be smoothed, polished, and checked to ensure the same cc's across the 4 chambers.

The larger exhaust ports will necessitate a header with larger diameter holes at the flange.

    Intake side port close up.

I'm merely documenting the 're'build and am hopefully be doing some basic wrenching.

Pistons are ready .... just a bit of compression.. :)

Wheels and tires: Actually still have the Hartge's, so they'll be going back on the car (14x7x25et), tires will be a set of Hancook slicks size 205-50-15.

            Suspension:
Typically we'd run the standard shortened/bent/coilover/bilstein rabbit combo in the front and the 5"x8.5"x350lb racing spring in the rear. But we've been recently playing around with adapting a completely machined larger diameter strut tube allowing for a nice thick Koni race shock. (if you look in the picture you'll recognize the reinforcement brackets are in fact the E30 rear trailing arm weld on reinforcement pieces!).

Dusty dash, waiting for a new life.

A couple of it's rivals from last year at buttonwillow

I'd love to see what that engine dynos @ HP wise.

one head almost ready, billet rockers being changed out to the HD's and the chambers will be polished a little better,

Dyno should be around 200-210(on a good day) at the flywheel. Could obviously go higher but not without sacrificing longevity.

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.
