Depends on wood, # of slats and type of finish. So let's say you want a oak slat like mine. I would charge you for the wood in raw form and a hourly rate to build it. You can just have me do the wood working part then stain and protective coat however you wish. Took me 6 hours to make those slats from plank to finished raw slats.

So you could buy the cheap 45 ebay rack and drill out the metal bars and bolt up the slats.

I have three total oak planks left(3 racks), you can do 10 across the middle like I did or just 6-8. I can make them up to 4" wide and you could do 6-8 of those.

If anyone REALLY wants one of these just get me measurements and I will build you direct fit slats. Pre drilled and ready to bolt up.

Or you can just go buy some 3" poplar boards from lowes and do it the mike burrows cheap way. For the 45.00 ebay rack and 20.00 in wood and 17.00 in bolts/nuts, you can do it yourself for under 100 minus the rack.

No need for planing or edging etc, just stain and buy a wooster bristle brush for the poly. take your time and layer up the coats if you want a shine finish. Or use a UV decking oil and you're set.

Minwax® Teak Oil is the best for a easy finish/protection. You follow the directions and coat ever year or so.
Protect and enhance the beauty of your wood furniture with Minwax® Helmsman Teak Oil Finish. Perfect for both indoor and outdoor applications. Protect and enhance the beauty of your wood furniture with Minwax® Helmsman Teak Oil Finish. Perfect for both indoor and outdoor applications.

you can also do a wipe on poly:
Discover the enduring protection and classic appearance of Minwax® Wipe-On Poly, a durable matte finish polyurethane for your wood surfaces. Discover the enduring protection and classic appearance of Minwax® Wipe-On Poly, a durable matte finish polyurethane for your wood surfaces.

I only use Minwax, so no idea about other brands etc. I just have been using this brand for years and so has my father for the last 40. Cost a bit more but worth it.~ Puch Cafe. ~ Do business? feedback ~ Check out my leather company ~

I love it but I think it'd look better on a darker car. Black, blue, darker reds, etc. I just feel like your car color doesn't bring out it's full potential. The first car I ever rode in was an e30

looks OK, but using those boards as the cross supports will be dangerous with much weight over maybe 50lbs. Comment

I took weights off my bench set and it held 130lbs without any trouble. I guess it might be hipster, but I built it to hold odds and ends IE: wheels, and old vintage things to give it a cool look. Like what the VW bug does with their racks if you know what I mean.

And the rack does not weight that much, I would have to say 30lbs or so.

In before "is that all you have" ;)

Try reading, this is a forum built off of that ;)

I went with white oak because of how is holds in the outdoor weather. Did you see the finish of the wood? That is 5 coats of stain, satin poly sealed 3 times and 11 coats of uv poly. I just went nuts and made a high end show piece. I don't ever see me using it for much more than small kegs and backpacks etc for road trips.

Got new ones, just not on yet.Last edited by F34R; 12-02-2013, 09:51 AM.~ Puch Cafe. ~ Do business? feedback ~ Check out my leather company ~

well, holding 130lbs and holding 130lbs safely are two different things. but it seems as if you really wont be using it for heavy lifting, so my point is moot.
 anyways, nice craftsmanship! Comment

Heavy lifting will be taken care of by the slammed trailer I am building this fall ;) and thank you.

Also I have no idea why in the world I would want to put over 100lbs on my roof anyways. Only things I can see that would be up there are kegs and my BMX bike(9lbs).Last edited by F34R; 03-24-2012, 11:51 AM.~ Puch Cafe. ~ Do business? feedback ~ Check out my leather company ~
