Few more updates, things are starting to come together!

Cleaning all the engine parts - oven cleaner works really well with a bit of scrubbing

Stripped the head on one of the bolts for the oil pump so we had to drill it out

a bit of a pain but it came out alright

The bottom end is coming together - got the pistons all cleaned up and put in. The rebuild has been a bit of a pain - mostly because of all the cleaning so it has affectionally been coined the slutmotor....

Oh and I got a new daily - it gets me from A-B lol. It's a Ford Focus XR5 turbo - or ST for those of you playing outside of Australia. The problem is I don't think I could get the BMW to be this fast without sinking a lot of money into it haha. You can see it up on stands in the background.

Dont worry with making photos of every detail.
Just a couple of photos would be fine.
So you cleaned all those four pistons?
They almost look like new now.

Yeah it took a while just using oven cleaner and a nylon scourer (scotch pad or similar) but the result was deninately worth it. There was heaps of carbon deposits on them that we're really hard to remove

Have been doing a little bit more cleaning.. it's almost ready to go back together now, I just have to place another small parts order.

Looking all clean - some of these parts will be getting a coat of paint before reassembly.

Thanks for the comments guys. MattAvino I have both the haynes manuals for the e30 and the e36 (for the engine), is the Bentley manual any different?

Sorry for the lack of updates but I finally have some good news, a new box of parts arrived! It contains most of the remaining things I needed.

I ordered a new oil pressure relief valve and spring after other people suggested it be replaced and this arrived - it is completely different from the old piston - did I order the wrong thing or is it a new design? I don't have any pics of the original atm to compare.

I also started painting the engine parts, the valve cover is wrinkle black and I will sand down the high points to bare aluminium I think.

Hopefully it will be all put back together in the next 3 weeks. I'll keep you updated!

                              Lots more photos!

I've been working hard trying to get this thing done as I really want to drive it soon, I have had it for ages and am still yet to drive an E30!

I pulled out the gearbox and drive shaft etc. I'm getting sick of working in my driveway though - I got saturated - definitely need a bigger shed.

Check out these gearbox mounts! They ripped in half as we removed the box

Check out the guibo too, totally rooted, I have a new one to replace it

Polished the top of the valve cover - pretty happy with how it turned out

                              Painted the block too

Check out this merc I saw by work the other day too, I'm guessing it's bagged haha

I spent all sunday with my mate putting the engine together - pretty happy with it and I can't wait to get it started.

Can anyone spot the repurposed Land Rover bolt lol?

The Haynes manual had some ridiculous idea to put the hydraulic tappets/lifters in by using silicone to set them in place and then peeling it off after it had dried... I just put some cardboard under it to keep them in placed and then pulled it out lol.

                              Getting the cams in

                              Timing all set up

And all put together! Looks pretty good to me - next step is getting it back in the car.

Let me know what you think!
