                          New Directions......

Well I figured it was time for an update since I'm deep into the new direction of the car. I'll start out with the shop. Had a buddies e36m3 in my shop for quite a while being a donor for his daily e30. The shop was a pit, this first picture is after about 3 hours of cleaning......

I realized having the car here, facing this direction was stupid since my tool boxes and work space was on the other side of the shop so I flipped stuff around....

After more cleaning, I finally landed in a space I was happy with.

Shortly after all this.....I received news that my time in this space is limited....more on that in a couple months.

So, when I left off we were building a turbo Ls motor for the car.........All of that it gone, every bit of it. Talking with some good friends I realized that I was potentially ruining the car and it's balance by doing something like that (if I haven;t already ruined it with the cage and stuff).

That being said I landed on a Seta from an e28 that my buddy had. He had done an I swap to it a few years back and had gone through the whole motor. Well the car was recently wrecked and it was available so I jumped on it. and I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

                          It felt like Second Christmas!

We o-ringed the block, but cylinder #1 was wonky, sent it to the machine shop and had it decked. After .009" we re-grooved......beautiful thing!

Traded some LS parts for powder work, a few goodies I've gotten back.

Manifold came it I'll be using temporarily until I finish my own.....figured I could use this to setup a decent jig once I modify the flange and gates....

                          Got my subframe finished.

Wastegates came in.......If you haven't picked it up yet......this will be a twin scroll setup....

Finished up my other shock tower for the e28 plates.

Then I started to buckle down to finish the cage......I'm so sick of chassis work, been doing it for over a year on and off. I will say, I have had a lot of fun and learned a TON doing my first cage, but it gets frustrating because of the type of person I am. As I get deeper into I notice thing I could have done different to save time and energy, or would have created less work down the road that I'm dealing with now. Oh well.....There is always next time. I decided to knock out door bars.....

Even 18" off the ground it's not as hard to get in and out of as I thought it would be.

A good example of lessons learned on the door bars......I placed the main hoop and A pillar bars in areas that I couldn't fully weld around the door bars.....so now I have to pull out the stick welder to finish them....be doing that tonight.

That should bring you up to speed. I have a few more bars to fit. need to trim from fender wells a bit then add foot protection, a few tube gussets in places and I really want to do some hill climbs next year, so I'll be adding some tubing for roof crush support....God forbid I ever need it.

                          More to come!

Next time, wait until the very end to weld in the base of the cage, this way you can move it around some to access all the boor bar welds.

                                ^^^Exactly.

I'll be doing that, and the other thing I'll do differently is make a horse shoe shape with the roof area and run the A pillars up to that instead of making a funky 2 bend bar all the way back to the main hoop.....botched that the first time haha. Also, having bendtech and know that my bends are accurate now I will bend and fit major areas outside the car and then install i.e. the main hoop and rear laterals and x-bracing.
