    Budget e30

    Purchased my first e30 for $1200 (1988 325is) 225k + on the clock.

Good: Straight body, strong engine, smooth transmission, Dash, doors, glass, cooling system looks recently updated, all windows words. front suspension has all new rubber and control arms, brand new rims and brand new tires, paint, glass

Bad: steering rack, rusted muffler, front spoiler is gone, front seats need recovering. no shifter boot, rear suspension, motor/tranny mounts, intake vacuum lines are rotting, intake boot is old, glove box needs latch, odometer is out of order. clutch rebound is iffy

First short trip was up to powder mountain in Utah. Probably not the best idea seeing that the road is somewhat dangerous but whatever. After going through a tank of gas rather quickly I found I was only getting 11MPG

I could not do much with what little tools I had in Utah but I decided to take care of the leaking steering rack by removing my PS pump in order to save it and deleted my PS with simple PS plugs from http://www.manntechnik.com/ . Next up was diagnosing "the bad" and getting the car back to South Dakota where all the tools and shop equipment is.

Now that the car has been trailered back to South Dakota I can get a start on making it road worthy for the soon to be 1200 mile trip back to Utah

Ordered: Master & Slave Clutch cylinders and upper shock mounts from turner motorsport. $150 Shipped
Bilstein touring rear shocks (sorry no I am not lowering my e30), brake & clutch pedal pads from FCP euro. $104 shipped
OEM Motor & Transmission mounts, manifold gasket, intake boot, misc exhaust hangers, misc exhaust gaskets, $130
Z3 1.9 shifter as well as bushings and such from thebmwpartstore. $80
Clutch stop from burgermotorsport (ebay) $6
Stainless steel brake lines from dnamotoring (ebay) $45
Stainless steel axle back exhaust from speedyracerparts (ebay) $225

Well finally got the car back to Utah. I got 30 MPG throughout the entirety of the trip (1000+ miles). I have addressed every nagging issue in the past month so the car is more then road worthy.

I have a question of any knowledgeable person reading my thread.

Just purchased a SET of eibach sway bars and was wondering if I should get adjustable sway bar links? Just fronts? just rears? or none. The car sits at stock ride height and will never be lowered. It will be auto-crossed rarely but driven hard on these Utah mountain roads.

any help would be greatly appreciated

first off, very nice pick up, especially for 1200

as far as the sway bars, just go with regular mounts, you won't notice much of a difference in my experience. I haven't had those sway bars on an e30 however, so maybe someone will have more specific input

          good luck!

Thanks! and thanks for the response. Thats kind of the conclusion I am coming to with links. But I do think I should do sway bar mounts (which are easy to make myself) as the car does have 226k miles.

Car looks great! LMK when you're ready to take care if that shift boot. I've got trim rings too if you don't have one.

OEM. Or make your own from pieces/parts. 4wheelparts.com is a good resource, I bought all my bits from them and made my own short links.
