Here's an underneath shot showing the cradle and the very very beginnings of the dry sump setup today. It's going to take a back seat because we're taking the #13 2002 out to Willow Springs for VARA's last race of the season this weekend.

Sub'd. Can't wait to see more progress! To be honest I'm surprised there isn't any hate on the VW motor yet, but it makes me happy.

I wasn't gonna hate on the VW motor but I did want to ask "what about Porsche"?

Remove german horizontally opposed 2 cylinder engine, install german horizontally opposed 4 cylinder engine.

                Problem? Not for me.

Haven't been able to play with the car the last week or so, but next up is getting some cardboard templates setup for the front and rear firewall, then start mocking them up with 30 gauge.

The oil cooler placement has been a source of a bit of debate. The final idea was to stick it just in front of the passenger side taillight with some sort of ducting coming up from the bottom. I'm not convinced, but part of a project like this is to know when to not say anything, despite a lot of tech, a portion still comes down to trial and error when we get the car out for some shakedown tests.

However I am pushing for louvers. A guy up the alley teaches at Art Center and he's made his own punches.... want to go with something similar to this Abarth Porsche ...

Are the 'hoods' on these cars vented? If so, I don't see why the ducting/fan combo wouldn't work for the oil cooler. Then again, I've heard oil temps are a bit more important on air cooled engines (which I have almost zero experience with) but hey, it's a lot better than having no cooler, right?

And just out of curiosity, on the subject of oil, why the dry sump setup? Aren't accusumps easier to set up and more maintenance free?

                          Also, needs moar widebody :D

Is there a reason the oil cooler setup from say a 911 turbo wasnt used, it works pretty good on them and is quite efficient, I feel like it wouldnt have too much cooling affect the way you have it mounted

That's the assumption at this point. Its worth emphasizing that part of the fun is realizing that there is no "I'm right your wrong" we can smartly theorize but nothing replaces track testing....

I've always enjoyed this little nugget on the Porsche 918 development.

As for the accusump vs drysump. While a CORRECTLY setup accusump can perform well, it just isn't a %100 replacement for a true drysump setup (I'll refrain from going all technical, but if you understand how both systems work then you understand).

I know where you're coming from, it's just that I have personal reservations about trusting my oiling system to a non-factory, belt driven external pump. Call me paranoid I guess
